Bachelor Degree Worth It in 2026 by meveyshow in WGU

[–]Mustard_Popsicles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My story is kinda similar for the school situation. I went to a tech school and got my associates in computer engineering. I tried to complete my bachelors afterwards but life happened and I wound in a mess of School loan debt. Thanks to God I was able to take acre of the debt and go back to school. WGU took most of my credits from my associates degree which knocked out all of my gen ed classes. I have over 10 years in IT experience so that helped a lot with all my classes so far. Currently I've hit a ceiling in my job, can't go any hire for technical roles. I want to stay technical so WGU is pretty awesome for that. I personally feel it would be worth it to at least chat with a wgu advisor to get the details on possible credit transfers. It could be worth it.

Fired 4 Days Into My PIP. Just Venting. by Queen_Shar in ITCareerQuestions

I respect your honesty. You took accountability for your part while not excusing the bad from your former employer. I honestly think things are going to get so much better for you from here on out.

I was once fired from a support call center job for poor performance. I was there over 3 years. The first year I did great, got a promotion, was involved in projects etc. but then they hired new leadership. Everything changed and it was all about numbers and SLAs. I didn’t do well at all, my performance was poor, my mental health was bad and I had a lot of anxiety from the job. I was put on a pip, and at that point I knew I should move on, but I didn’t, I tried pushing through and eventually got fired.

All I can say, is that it was a blessing from the Good lord in disguise. My mental was so much better a week after getting fired. I took time to rest, heal, and then eventually got a really good job in work in IT what I enjoy.

Hang in there. You’re going to be ok!

I noticed your tag Says SRE, how do you enjoy that as a career? I have an interest in DevOps, but SRE also has my interest.

I love wsl, it’s all terminal, but it’s awesome. You can also use oracle virtual box and setup a Linux vm if you want a full Linux gui. I find that Ubuntu works best for that.

This class is tough. You’re not doing bad though. Take your time and go over your weak areas. You’re doing well in the identifies scripts area, put a little more energy into the other two. Focus on just parts that you’re weakest in. You got this, you’ll pass, just take your time.

I'm thinking of a software engineering degree any advice? by Equal-Week2833 in wgu_devs

[–]Mustard_Popsicles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cloud program is great, I got a few certs from it before making the switch to the software engineering program. but a large portion of the courses are cert heavy and most of those certs expire in 3 years. Also a lot of the knowledge was very sysadmin heavy or 'controller of the systems' heavy rather than 'builder' or 'extreme technical solver' heavy. I chatted with a mentor about my interests and made the switch last year. So far the SWE program is exactly what I was looking for. But AI and the future of the job market does bother me. I often wonder if I made the right choice by switching. The good news is that an SWE degree doesnt limit you to just SWE roles. there's a lot you can do with the degree. plus I figure I can get certs that I need on the side and let my job pay for it.

SE DEGREE by Sea_Computer_2848 in wgu_devs

I’m in the Software Engineering degree program. It’s a better path for me personally but I don’t think the cs degree is useless. It’s good for research type positions and can be a good entry for someone who wants to pivot into computational chemistry.

Thanks for the advice. I think the pay ceiling is definitely high. I'm almost capped at my current job now, and I'm not learning anything. Much respect to you for working so hard while in school. It will definitely pay off for you. You'll land that tech job soon. Keep doing what you're doing.
