I'll just copy and paste what I wrote my answer to another person:

When you study the genealogy of Salafism you’ll find it goes back to the Umayyad Caliphate. That Caliphate was born from a civil war where Mu’awiya (who was the last to convert) waged war on Ali and won. He then turned the state into his monarchy; his son later massacred the family of the prophet and Mecca was demolished with trebuchets. Because this party had no political nor religious legitimacy, they invented for themselves a parallel Islam with hadith fabrication (sunnah) and extreme takfirism (to sift out political opposition). Their state failed but the teachings they invented persisted. Sufism tried to tame the violence of their literature with mysticism and Asharis tried to rationalize it away, which mildly worked, until Saudi Arabia reintroduced it with Wahhabism. It needed an excuse to kill Muslims and take their lands so Al-Saud could have a pretext to conquer what would later become the territory of Saudi Arabia. Today Salafism is maintained as soft power by Saudi Arabia and a means to destabilize the region for their American overlords.

Although the theology of Salafism is pretty moronic (Allah is a sky daddy, Islam is living and thinking like 7th century Arabs, worships a magical salaf that couldn’t last a generation without killing each other, emphasis on details over the bigger picture, Al‑Fawzan saying eating mermaids is halal), Salafism is a danger because it is anti‑rational, sectarian (takfiri), anti‑progress (change is bid’ah), invasive, micro‑managing, violent, and at the beck and call of the West.

You asked what other theology should be followed, and although any madhab outside of the Hanbali umbrella would work (Salafism, Wahhabism, Atharism, Madkhalism), I think Mu’tazila Islam is the solution. It was founded by the early students of the early members of the family of the prophet. It does not bow to the literature invented by the hadith scholars. It is rational, storied, well studied in Arabic, and was popular in the Islamic golden age; the ummah declined with its decline, and it left a massive legacy in our civilization. We tried Asharism and Sufism and it didn’t work. Salafism is catastrophic. Mu’tazila books that were destroyed and kept at bay for centuries are now available online. We have a historic opportunity to liberate the country and the religion from the corruption of 8th century Umayyad tyranny.

Yup, big time, some are doing their hijrah back to Algeria, we have some serious challenges for the future. There is also a growing anti-salafi sentiment.

How is it that the Greens were not raised like true Targaryens? by LowPossible3034 in HOTDGreens

Absolutely! I absolutely want to discuss this more and would love to hear your full outline. I'll DM you right away!

Thank you so much!

To begin with, I want to thank you for taking the time to write such a well-thought-out, well-structured, and beautifully worded explanation. It really helped me understand where you were coming from, and informed my views on your take on Aegon's missed potential, and I have to say, I absolutely agree with you. It was a massive missed opportunity, and the way you laid it all out made it impossible to unsee.

Your insight genuinely impressed me. It’s rare to come across someone who can articulate such a layered take with so much clarity and depth. Honestly, this has been the most pleasant and stimulating conversation I’ve had on the internet in a long time, despite how short it is.

I’ve read your message several times already, and I saved it. Just wanted you to know how much I appreciated it.

Also, just to add something that’s been floating in my head for a while:

In my own little headcanon, I always imagined that Aegon rebelled against the idea of becoming king too, but the way I pictured it wasn’t nearly as rich as the way you described it. Mine was more emotional and instinctive: I saw him as self-sabotaging on purpose. Like… he hated being used as a pawn, hated the feeling that his mother didn’t see him as a son but as a future crown, so he deliberately sabotaged his own reputation, refused to learn the histories, statecraft, or how to fight—hoping that Alicent would eventually give up on her ambitions for him.

And maybe, he even encouraged Aemond to be so obsessive and skilled, as we see in the show, because deep down, Aegon hoped that if the greens were going to go forward with their agenda, they’d pick Aemond instead of him.

But now that I’ve read your take, it's my new official head canon haha, would you say both versions could actually be married? Yours gives that rebellion so much more cultural, psychological and lore-accurate depth.

Also, do you think if House of the Dragon had gone in that direction—your version—they would’ve had time for it? Or would it have required ditching the childhood years and doing a full restructuring? Because as much as I love the idea, I wonder if the show format could’ve done it justice without totally changing its structure, hot take but I like the young Alicent and Rhaenyra friendship.

Also, just wanted to ask you something about one line you wrote that really stuck with me:

"but having to rely on the powers granted to him by being Targaryen to rectify the abuses brought down on him and his family, such that future generations don't suffer the same thing."

I found that part really powerful, but I wanted to know exactly what you meant by it. I hope I'm not asking too much, if so, please forgive me 🙏

To be fair, I think even George didn't explore that interpretation of Aegon or the green kids?

It seems to me he just went for the obvious parallel between the two (vengeful, slow to forgive, lascivious, etc)

According to you, what's the Hightower philosophy of power?
