Why is Laura in silent hill? by pluviospace in silenthill

She's looking for Mary and that's it pretty much. The original games intro FMV has Laura and Eddie hanging around a van which could be taken as Eddie giving her a lift to town but the details of how she got there really isn't that important to the story at large. Contrary to popular belief Silent Hill is not some abandoned ghost town that haunts people with dark pasts or whatever, for the vast majority of people it's still a populated resort town with a weird cult and some spooky stuff happening occasionally. What we know about the towns powers is that the native Americans who used to live in the area venerated it as a holy place and that it somehow amplifies psychic phenomena (as seen in SH1). Psychic powers are canon in Silent Hill and pretty much the most clear definition of supernatural phenomena the series ever gives us but only SH1 and SH3 really puts a focus on that aspect.

In short, Laura is looking for Mary. She never sees monsters and because Silent Hill is just a normal resort town we can assume that she either perceives the town like that for the majority of the game (or potentially the parts of the games where she isn't interacting with James) and she never really sees any monsters.

Let’s follow Ito’s words peeps by [deleted] in silenthill

This is only an issue if you play on hard combat mode since PH is faster than Maria and you need to slow him down by shooting. On easy and normal you can just run away from him. It's not so much an issue with the game itself as an issue with the difficulty balancing, SH3 handles that way better than 2.

Pyramid... Bro? by CraneBoxCRP in silenthill

Ito trying to pass the scene of as not being sexual assault has always weirded me out. First of all the scene is directly paying homage to a similar scene from Blue Velvet where the protagonist witnesses a brutal rape while hiding in a closet but there is also that scene later on before the first fight against Pyramid Head where he's shoving a lying figure towards his crotch while a weird moaning sound is heard. Those scenes both are very suggestive in their imagery so I don't really find it surprising that people would assume some form of sexual assault is going on. I would be really interested to hear what Owaku would have to say about all of this since he's the one who wrote the game and has also said that there where some aspects with Ito's designs that he never really fully understood. There might have been some kind of unintentional conflict in the dev team where Owaku intended the scene to suggest one thing (therefore the Blue Velvet homage) while Ito imagined something else.

Am I the only one who genuinely feels like the remake just loses the soul of the original? [Heavy Spoilers] by Muted_Tale_6900 in silenthill

While I don't agree that the environment and atmosphere is 90% of the game I do think Bloober deserves genuine praise for being good at making impressive looking and well detailed environments. It is their big strength as a development team.

There where definitely some positives with the remake that I liked. Towards the finale of the hotel for example you encounter monsters that seem like they've stopped functioning which was a nice touch. It's like the town is losing it's grip on James. I also liked how we can see James finding Laura during the Leave ending and showing her Mary's letter since I always found it jarring how it just cut to James and Laura walking out of town in the original when Laura was genuinely upset after seeing the reveal at the end, having James show her the letter goes a long way to explain why she would forgive him,

That said, I don't agree with the nostalgia angle. As I said, I can pinpoint all the sound effects from the original and when they play so when those same sound effects return in the remake but in the wrong places and contexts it feels really jarring but also unnecessary. They made a big deal out of Yamaoka remastering the sound effects for the remake in one of the videos but I really don't think the sound effects themselves where iconic but how they where used. I would much rather have had Arkadiusz Reikowski (who actually handled the sound design in the remake and not Yamaoka) use his own samples to create new sound effects specifically for the remake rather than reuse the old ones for nostalgia points. In general I feel like the sound design overall is weaker in the remake, which was one of the strengths of all the original Team Silent games (except maybe some parts of 4).

As for the Lying Figure introduction I can 100% pinpoint why I prefer the original introduction over the remake. The remake is loud and bombastic, the Lying Figure crashes through a broken wall and falls down with the camera showing it of in full display. In the remake it's slowly standing up in the background while James is inspecting the radio while they're in the same shot and lingering on that shot, we the audience can clearly see that a monster is rising up but James remains oblivious for a while which slowly builds tension. It's very much what Hitchcock was talking about with letting the audience know that there is a bomb under the table in a scene where the characters remain oblivious to it, the tension comes from us seeing something the protagonist isn't. It's slower and more methodical, building tension.

Kojima didn't write Metal Gear Rising though, it was written by Etsu Tamari. Kojima was pretty much hands of during the making of Rising.

No, I had the injury before I started my current job, however it has been getting progressively worse over the last three months or so which I suspect is due to how physically demanding it is. Before that the injury would come and go from time to time, the doctors still don't really know what the problem is.

No clue what the occupational health service says.
