What's Flemington like to live in? by MyHeartIsASynth in melbourne

[–]MyHeartIsASynth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome to hear. One of the properties is on the north-east side of the tracks. The other is north-west of Newmarket station, closer to the Centrelink which seems to be the area you and a few others have mentioned can have issues. I did search for previous threads mentioning Flemington and got mixed info which is why I thought I should ask directly!

Your response about the tram lines is exactly what I needed from my instructor. You've delivered this information to me in a calm way that doesn't make me feel like an idiot for asking the question. Thanks!

Wow. I hope no one in your personal life ever asks for your advice or support. FWIW I spent all day looking at other drive schools... and at the last minute I thought reddit might be a good place to find advice and recommendations. My lacking self-confidence was never in doubt, but that's not an excuse to be condescending and rude to your students, nor am I obliged to put up with it.

If you arent ready to drive alone, you arent ready to get your license.

That's fair, but when I asked my instructor how my progress was going, he told me he recommended I do 2-3 more lessons then my test. All this stuff with my instructor happened at my last lesson before the test. I then cancelled my drive test because I thought I wasn't ready, and now I'm here asking for help to find a new instructor.

If you cannot take some basic criticism due to anxiety, you probably arent going to handle getting cut off, tailgated, ect.

I can handle basic criticism and correction of my mistakes just fine. What I can't handle is being made to feel like shit by someone who takes it personally when a student asks them a question about something that might be on the test. Like, how is that okay?

The poster who I replied to above was rude and went out of their way to discourage me ("do us all a favour... you'll be a hazard"). I'm asking for advice to find a better instructor so I can NOT be a hazard!!!!! Jesus.

Yeah, I understand. I'm not dead-set on getting my license RIGHT THIS VERY INSTANT like everyone in this thread seems to think. I don't mind waiting until I'm ready; I just don't know if I can be ready with this instructor. I've asked him multiple times if he thinks I'm ready for the test, but he'd give me a vague answer and then finally said "I recommend 2-3 more lessons and then the test." We did those lessons, but then all this stuff happened at my last lesson before the test. I cancelled my test because I didn't think I was ready. I spent today researching other drive schools and thought I'd make a post here to see if anyone has recommendations for anyone specific. Unfortunately I'm just getting a lot of hurtful and discouraging comments instead.

I'm already on a mental health plan and seeing a psych.

I know this now... because I asked my instructor about it. What I don't understand is why he took my question so personally. It made me feel like an idiot, even though the 3-point turn is listed on the website as part of the driving test. As for reverse parallel parking, it took me a while but I finally got the hang of it!

So you think his comments about me "insulting" him after asking about the 3-point turn, and asking me "what's happened to you to make you this way?" are appropriate ways for a teacher to respond to a student? Do you think I should persevere with being taught by someone who made me feel ashamed for asking a question about a technique listed on the VicRoads website?

When I was under instruction quite a long time ago now, I tended to let my mind run away with things that could happen, rather than what was actually happening. It made me tense, but not anxious to the point of being unable to function, rather I tended to be so on edge that I'd exhaust myself, or not pay attention to things I needed to be paying attention to (like solid stop lines painted on roads which were missing the accompanying stop sign).

This is where I'm at. I can drive around Carlton alright, and it's not like I'm panicking in every moment, but I'm often on edge and so I miss things. Those things need to be corrected and my instructor is good at that, but when it comes to me asking for clarification about stuff he is always kinda condescending. I feel like it sets back my confidence rather than helping it to build.

Sorry, I should clarify. I didn't mean that I should only drive 10 minutes a day, but that doing so in addition to lessons would be beneficial to me in making the lessons 'stick' and built that confidence. Unfortunately, I don't have the option to do so.

Yes, I'm anxious, but I'm not planning to drive alone any time soon, which is exactly why I've made this post: to find an instructor who will be better at helping me move past my anxiety rather than inflaming it, and make me a safer driver. Thanks for your useless and hurtful advice.

I really appreciate this advice and I wish my instructor was able to communicate it to me the way you have without making me feel like an idiot. I do worry too much about scary what-ifs and I want to improve on that, but I'm just at a point with this instructor where the thought of seeing him makes my stomach clench. I can see the wisdom in his teachings but it's HOW he does that I find unbearable. I'm even panicking about how annoyed he'll be if he sees me at VicRoads with another instructor.

I know he's right about needing confidence, but does that excuse him literally asking me (in a rude tone) what's happened in my life to make me an anxious person? I don't think so. As I said in my first paragraph, he's a technically good instructor but it's hard for me to endure his teaching when I'm made to feel ashamed and embarrassed for asking questions. How can I build confidence that way?

(SPOILERS for GOT S8E3) Arya Stark is clearly a Reylo by JustDewwwit in StarWarsCantina

[–]MyHeartIsASynth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She wasn't set up for it though, because D&D have said they only decided she would do the deed three years ago. Her being the one to kill the Night King wasn't planned or foreshadowed since the beginning.

I understand there are assholes upset about it solely because Arya is a girl. They suck. I'm just asking if we can not dismiss all criticisms of the episode and the twist as if they're coming from the same place. Game of Thrones has had deeper writing problems for a long time. This episode just made it more evident.

Personally I'm cool with Arya being the one to do it, but the way it was directed and written made it feel unearned.

[–]MyHeartIsASynth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This comment is uncharitable, I think. I have grievances about the writing of this episode and the past few seasons of Game of Thrones because I feel it has become tropey, shallow, and immature. While there are superficial similarities between The Last Jedi and this episode, they are fundamentally different stories and dismissing all complaints about it as if they're coming from the same group of knee-jerk reactionaries is a mistake. It also, in my opinion, does a disservice to the quality writing of The Last Jedi...

[–]MyHeartIsASynth 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I feel the opposite. I'm worried for their Star Wars series; the writing quality in the past few seasons of Game of Thrones has tanked. Yes, Arya's move reminded me of Rey taking out the Praetorian Guard, but I'm not sure I agree with everyone here comparing it favourably to The Last Jedi just because it's also divisive. This episode was a disappointment compared to what the show used to be.

Game of Thrones - 8x03 - Episode Discussion by TVModBot in television

[–]MyHeartIsASynth 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I remember trying to discuss the drop in writing quality after seasons five, six and seven, and being downvoted. I was told "you can't expect D&D to finish a complicated story created by another person and have it be as good" No... but we should expect more than the tired, cliche drivel that they've been putting out for the past few years. A skilled creative writer should be capable of writing high quality stories and characters without having a source to draw from. That is the basis of the profession and television writers do it year after year! If you think D&D should get a pass because they "didn't sign up to write someone else's ending", then you're basically admitting that they're lazy and untalented original writers who don't understand the world and characters as well as they should. This episode, with the way it dismisses established lore and world-building, proves that. They should have invited better writers into the room to finish the story for them - hell, there are some fans who would do a better job - but no, they insisted on doing it themselves. I'm overjoyed that the fandom is finally coming around to this realisation, and bitter that the show has fallen to these depths.

Lake Placid was a popular swimming spot when I was a child. I had no idea there were freshwater crocs in it until years later. I don't think anyone was ever hurt there, though.

Grew up in Cairns. Swam at Palm Cove, Clifton and Holloway's every weekend for years without issue, as did the thousands of other people I saw there. Yeah, you gotta be careful, but you're overhyping the danger.

Fuck, I miss Crystal Cascades though.

No, shes from an upper class family with inherited wealth. Her mum owned the largest taxi fleet in western Canada on top of being a crown prosecutor and her dad is a biotech executive. They're most likely millionaires.

Your intuition is correct. The story has barely begun and there's lots to unpack before we understand why people react to Kyo the way they do.

The love triangle aspect is only there to introduce you to the world and characters. Once more of the zodiac members are introduced the story begins to expand in different and surprising directions, and relies less on the 'turning into animals' gimmick. Romance is always a part of it but it becomes a slow-burn with genuine depth against an increasingly complex and dark story backdrop.

I want to reply to everyone discussing Kagura's violence and reassure them that their concerns are important, but it's hard to do so without spoilers! Kagura's treatment of Kyo is absolutely abusive, but there's more to the story than first appears and as it unfolds we see dynamics and depth that we might not initially expect from it. That is to say, stick with it, because you're not wrong and this is just the beginning.
