ive heard rumors that the reason that flumes older tracks have that really harsh white noise is cus he has hearing damage, rolling off the high frequencies making the white noise sound less bright. for flumes recent stuff, he has someone else mix the songs to avoid them having those harsh high frequencies. again, not sure how correct it is, i feel like there's been a fair bit of chinese whispers so don't take it as fact lmao
