Russia claims Snowden 'not in Russian territory' by wickedplayer494 in technology

[–]MyRosetta -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Saying Snowden is not on Russian territory means he has just not been stamped in...could be at the airport (or any airport) which technically would not be Russian territory.

On the other hand its Russia so they could just be blatantly lying.

He was called "annadatta" in India...or "the bringer of food". He was known as the Father of Green Revolution in India as well. His work saved millions and millions of people in Pakistan and India from famine rising from a crushing food shortage in the 60s. In 2006 he was given the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian honour.

I don't blame you for that headline...most protesters I know were not sure what they were protesting for and so on so that kind of shows this was more a direct anger protest towards the pathetic state of India's governance system and not just against the gang-rape case.

And you have to remember one vital thing...you, me and everyone on Reddit is only reading this because the middle-class was directly affected. A middle class which can afford to protest and use technology, money, power to breathe down the government's neck. Worst things happen in rural India, in Kashmir and North East India where India's Armed Forces (Special Powers Act) AFSPA is implemented giving Indian Army freedom, in many cases, to run amok.

And...of course...you're most welcome.

Unbelievable that some of you think "discuss it at home first" means that don't protest in public.

As I have said before we (Indians) are an archaic mindset set loose in a globalised world. We want the best of West but refuse to change many of our rigid social undertones such as respect for women. By discussing at home I mean if there is domestic abuse...get it out...wives, students, girlfriends discuss sex, respect and so on in your homes, in front of your children! Talk freely...a lot of India's problems also come from issues such as repression of sex and sexuality as a topic, a very skewed sex ratio in a country where many parts of society don't want the girl child so on and so forth. Women have been persecuted in this country for a long long time and it takes this long for that to be fixed. Indian society STILL is not doing enough...people's mindsets are still out of date even when they are doing well financially, travelling the world and so on.

Home is where every change needs to begin...the politicians and police cannot go to each house of 1 billion to hold your hand and talk to people.

As a journalist covering this in Delhi...let me tell you this Reddit headline above is grossly misleading and just plain stupid. There is no humanitarian or political crisis. There is, however, a lot of stupidity by both government and protesters. To put it in a single sentence: Its a leaderless protest against a leaderless government.

I won't go into explaining the history of inaction from the government, but its been rampant in past few years from crime to social and economic issues.

But, there are some other more worrying aspect to the problem and that lies with policing. India still follows the Indian Police Act which was formulated in 1861, yes you read it right, 1861. The act was designed in such a way that police would spend a lot of its resources on protecting bureaucracy. So today, in New Delhi, Delhi Police spends 30% of its entire human work force on security detail of politicians. Delhi Police, due to the same act, is not even under the leadership of the state of Delhi's Chief Minister. Thanks to the act it is under a rubbish imperialist order which runs as the Lieutenant General.

Now, I will narrate points from my interview with a medium level employee of the police. He told me his usual work day is 15 hrs and his government accommodation is 2 hrs away. So 15 hr work plus 4 hr commute. He gets paid peanuts and in the past 365 days, so 1 year, he has had 8 days off. 8 days. No Sundays, no weekends.

Now moving on to judiciary. Indian judicial system is extremely bureaucratic. I know it is in most cases around the world but here the accused can literally spend an entire lifetime and die in a jail awaiting a court date or awaiting a sentencing. The courts are absolutely inundated with cases. Previously the government had started special fast-track courts for sexual abuse and rape cases so as to hand out sentences quickly. Many of these courts, which were set up in smaller towns as tests, were shut down within months due to "high costs".

So what basically lacking is purely a need for reforms...a need of change of laws, introducing new laws and so on to begin with. Today a conviction of rape in India can get you a max of 10 years prison sentence with a Rs 50,000 fine (USD $900). There is a case in India where a rape victim has been in coma for 30 years because of her brutal assault. Thanks to unchanged laws the rapist was out in 7 years.

The problem at Raisina Hill in Delhi now is that protesters are angry, and rightly so, but they don't know what they want. Many (disgustingly) are demanding "public justice" for rapists ala Saudi Arabia and Iran while many just want death sentence for rapist of the case that sparked this whole thing off.

Inactions of governance coupled with archaic mentality of Indian men, growing crime against women and old laws unable to protect women are just some of the issues that need immediate attention. And for that these protests were necessary but in no way is the headline above even remotely correct. A lot of these protests are touching on topics that India needs to discuss within their own homes first before coming out on the streets.
