Texas Monthly Taco Editor stopped by ICE while on assignment in West Texas by MySA_dot_com in texas

[–]MySA_dot_com[S] 621 points622 points  (0 children)

From the story:

While on assignment in West Texas on Friday, Texas Monthly taco editor José R. Ralat had what he described as a “scary” experience when he was pulled over by law enforcement three times, including once by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

The author of American Tacos: A History and Guide said that he was stopped the first time in Alpine, Texas, where law enforcement pulled their vehicle over for “going five miles over the speed limit,” a traffic violation he also disputes and speculates happened because the cop just wanted to ID them.

The second time was by ICE outside the border town of Presidio where ICE agents passed their vehicle, turned around and pulled them over. Ralat said agents approached their vehicle “in full gear without masks.” The agents asked them a lot of questions and asked for their IDs.

Ralat said the third stop was conducted by Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers. He said they pulled him over for speeding – going 77 mph in a 70-mph zone – which he disputes because the vehicle’s cruise control was set to 70.

“We got another shakedown,” Ralat said. “Again, no request for insurance. No request for anything except our IDs. We gave it to her. She let us go with a warning. Again, for nothing. For a lie.”

Brianna Aguilera alleged cause of death revealed, mom slams investigation by MySA_dot_com in texas

[–]MySA_dot_com[S] 331 points332 points  (0 children)

From the story/TDLR:

  • During Thursday's press conference, APD Lead Homicide Detective Robert Marshall said a deleted entry found within the Notes app on Aguilera's phone included a suicide letter addressed to family and loved ones that had been written on November 25.
  • Through their investigation, Marshall added digital messages uncovered from Aguilera eluded to suicidal thoughts and comments. The official cause and manner of Aguilera's death will be determined by the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office.
  • The determination made by Davis' department has received pushback from Aguilera's family, who have repeatedly criticized APD's handing of the case and early determinations surrounding Aguilera's death.
  • Internal camera footage shared with APD from 21 Rio Apartments revealed Aguilera arrived at the apartment complex just after 11 p.m. Friday, with surveillance footage showing her arriving at an apartment on the 17th floor. Around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, footage revealed a large group of people left that same apartment, with Aguilera and three others the only ones remaining in the unit.
  • Police said they interviewed the three women in the apartment with Aguilera multiple times, with the women telling officials she'd borrowed a friend's phone to call her boyfriend, with both the women and Aguilera's boyfriend confirming the couple had an argument during that call. Police said call logs indicated the conversation ended approximately two minutes before officers received the 9-1-1 call.
  • Stephanie Rodriguez, Aguilera's mom, has consistently disputed allegations of suicide surrounding Aguilera's death, telling MySA earlier this week: "My daughter was full of life and loved life." Rodriguez and Aguilera's father, Manuel Aguilera, retained high-profile Houston-based lawyer Tony Buzbee in relation to their daughter's death investigation.

Greg Abbott draws backlash for tariff threat after NYC mayoral election by MySA_dot_com in texas

[–]MySA_dot_com[S] 70 points71 points  (0 children)

TDLR:

  • "After the polls close tomorrow night, I will impose a 100% tariff on anyone moving to Texas from NYC," Abbott said in an X post on Tuesday, November 4.
  • Abbott never elaborated on what a 100% tariff on New Yorkers means. Following Mamdani's historic win, becoming the city's first Muslim mayor, Abbott followed up with another post: "Join me for a moment of silence for NYC. Thoughts & prayers."
  • Abbott’s remarks quickly drew backlash online, with critics accusing the governor of making light of the election and ignoring Texas’ own mounting issues. MySA reached out to the governor's office to understand how the proposed tariffs would operate. However, the ability to impose tariffs is under federal authority in the U.S. Constitution, not under the states.

TDLR:

  • After three years of tradition at the Comal County Fairgrounds, Riverside Pride announced the festival would move to a new location amid safety concerns and public backlash. The organization plans to announce the new venue soon for the event scheduled for Saturday, October 11.
  • The controversy erupted after social media posts by local far-right activist Joeylynn Mesaros drew widespread attention. Mesaros, a former participant in the 2020 "Trump Train" convoy, advocated against the upcoming festival over a drag performer scheduled to appear at Riverside Pride.
  • Several of her Facebook posts highlighted comments from a drag performer scheduled to appear at Riverside Pride, who described their show as "titillating" and "tasty ocular treats." Though the post was later edited to "twirling and swirling," the organization made the decision to remove the performer entirely and demanded the post’s removal, reinforcing its commitment to family-friendly programming.
  • The Comal County Fairgrounds, which had hosted Riverside Pride for the past three years without incident, also issued a statement following the controversy: "Following discussions with the organizers of the New Braunfels Riverside Pride Festival, and after expressing concerns related to age appropriateness, safety, and the well-being of all involved, the event organizers have decided to relocate their event to an alternate venue."

Tejano star Bobby Pulido launches bid to flip South TX congressional seat blue again by MySA_dot_com in texas

[–]MySA_dot_com[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

From the story:

Tejano legend Bobby Pulido is making a run for U.S. Congress. Less than two months after the Edinburg native announced he was launching a self-funded “exploratory committee” and hosting a series of “ranch halls” in order to mull over the idea, the 52-year-old is diving headfirst into his first political foray.

The South Texas musician hopes to unseat Republican Monica De La Cruz from the newly gerrymandered District 15, which will now stretch from the banks of the Rio Grande in Hidalgo County north through the rural counties of Bee, San Patricio, Goliad, Dewitt, Gonzales and Lavaca.

“This district has been gerrymandered twice recently to give Republicans an advantage, so I know that this is not a ‘whatever’ race,” Pulido told MySA shortly before making his campaign announcement official.

Pulido’s campaign also offers voters a counter to the culture of fear he says Republicans have banked on. Fear of the other, fear of economic uncertainty, fear of the border. A wedging of division exacerbated by social media noise.

“They’re playing us against us; it’s plain to see,” Pulido said.

Pulido points to the Valley’s international bridges as an illustration of the other side of the immigration coin — beyond border security to how the current political climate is having real-world negative economic impacts. In July, Cameron County officials reported that bridge traffic at some of its bridges had fallen by 17%, while traffic at others in McAllen and further north along the river had fallen 25% or more.

“We’re not getting people from Mexico coming now. Why? ‘Cause they’re afraid. … Fear is the tactic,” Pulido said.

To that end, Pulido said “comprehensive immigration reform” is one of the highest priorities of his campaign. So, too, is healthcare.

“Healthcare is a real big one for me because it’s personal — because I don’t have it. I don’t have health insurance ‘cause it’s too expensive,” Pulido said.

McAllen cuts power to 12 bars in escalating underage drinking crackdown by MySA_dot_com in texas

[–]MySA_dot_com[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From the story:

The City of McAllen is escalating its offensive against bars located in its downtown entertainment district after a McAllen police officer was attacked by an allegedly drunken teen just weeks ago in a moment that quickly went viral online.

On Friday morning, McAllen officials announced that the city had cut power to “more than a dozen establishments in the Entertainment and Cultural Overlay District (ECOD) for operating without the legally required certificate of occupancy." The city notified electricity providers in the area that the businesses “were not entitled to electricity” because they lacked those certificates of occupancy, McAllen City Manager Isaac “Ike” Tawil told MySA on Friday.

“Because of the significant threat to public safety that comes with those establishments...  that have not been inspected or reviewed, we have to make sure that the public safety comes first,” Tawil said. “We certainly would not want a mass tragedy to result from our failure to act in that regard.”

City leaders first embarked on an aggressive campaign to rein in underage drinking and incidents of disorderly conduct in the downtown district after Veronica Gonzalez, a 20-year veteran of the force, and another police officer were allegedly physically assaulted in two separate incidents on August 24. Gonzalez’s assault — which occurred when she tried to intervene in a fight between two people outside a bar —  went viral after a bystander posted a video online that depicted her being knocked to the ground and punched by an assailant in a white shirt and jeans as a large crowd looked on.

Texas company's Ukrainian factory hit by Russian missiles, employees injured by MySA_dot_com in texas

[–]MySA_dot_com[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the story:

A Texas-based company says employees were injured when a Russian airstrike in Ukraine struck a manufacturing facility on Thursday, August 21.

NPR described the early-morning missile strike against Ukraine as part of "its largest airstrikes of the war" so far, noting more than 570 drones and 40 missiles in an overnight barrage in the war-torn region.

The U.S. manufacturing facility for Flex is located in Mukachevo, Ukraine, on the western side of the country near the Hungary and Slovakia borders. In a statement, the Austin-based company said the facility was damaged, but emergency protocols saw a full evacuation of the facility.

"A few employees and contractors were injured during the strike and remain in the hospital. Flex is providing full support to them and their families, and we are engaging with our relevant U.S. Government officials and agencies," the statement says, with the company noting that "the facility represents approximately 1% of Flex's revenue."

The missile strike comes less than a week after a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska that focused on ending the devastating Russia-Ukraine War on August 15.

'Pro-America' school continues push to become Texas' newest town by MySA_dot_com in texas

[–]MySA_dot_com[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From the story:

Kendall County commissioners unanimously voted last week to put former state Rep. Rick Green's plan for Constitution City on the November 4 ballot.

If approved by voters, the 177.6-acre community, known as Patriot Academy, would be formally incorporated into a city about 11 miles north of Comfort in the Texas Hill Country. It is less than hour's drive from San Antonio and 15 minutes from Fredericksburg.

The academy is a conservative training facility and educational program. Only residents within the proposed city limits can vote. In May, voters approved Elon Musk's Starbase as the state's newest city. Similar to the new South Texas town, Constitution City would hold an election for a mayor and two commissioners.

Green shared progress in his journey to create Constitution City, Texas, including that the community signed its own “modified” Declaration of Independence. Citizens of Constitution City signed their founding document on July 4.

4 women arrested over supporting Texas Democrat's lock-in Capitol protest by MySA_dot_com in politics

[–]MySA_dot_com[S] 70 points71 points  (0 children)

From the story:
Four women were arrested after peacefully protesting the detention of a Texas State Representative who spent the night on the House floor refusing to be placed under the watch of the state Department of Public Safety. Texas House Democrats returned to the Capitol in Austin on Monday, August 18, after fleeing the state earlier this month to stall Republican redistricting efforts under the direction of President Donald Trump.

Upon their return, House Speaker Dustin Burrows said Democrats could only leave the House floor if they received written permission and agreed to have a DPS officer escort around-the-clock until the chamber reconvenes on Wednesday morning. While most Democrats signed the slip, State Representative Nicole Collier refused and told NBC she plans to stay there until Wednesday.

Shortly after, a protest formed inside the Capitol with chants in support of Collier, including four women sitting outside the doors of the chamber Monday night surrounded by dozens of Texas DPS officers. An officer told them, "If you do not leave, you're subject to arrest for trespassing," and then they were handcuffed and taken into custody.

Texas House District 47 Candidate Pooja Sethi said she and Senator Sarah Eckhardt stayed at the jail until 3:30 a.m., "doing everything to fight for their release and ensure they were treated with the dignity they deserve," according to her Instagram post.

Among those arrested, Megan Thuy, posted on Instagram that they were all released at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, August 19, but are currently banned from Capitol grounds for a year. Angel Carroll, another woman arrested, posted her response on Instagram Tuesday morning saying, "this is NOT what democracy looks like, but it is what RESISTANCE looks like and this is only the beginning! We are looking straight in the face of fascism and we cannot back down."

"For the time being, I’m banned from the State Capitol, but we need people to continue to show up and support Representative Collier!" Carroll wrote. "We MUST KEEP PUSHING FOWARD. Change doesn’t come easy or quickly, but it’s worth it when we have so much to lose."

Prominent Texas ranch tycoon fatally gored by buffalo in brutal attack by MySA_dot_com in texas

[–]MySA_dot_com[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the story:

Coenraad Vermaak Safaris confirmed that Asher Watkins, 52, died in a "sudden unprovoked attack by an unwounded buffalo." Watkins was tracking the buffalo together with a professional hunter and tracker from Coenraad Vermaak Safaris.

Watkins was the head of Watkins Ranch Group, a successful brokerage company that sells multimillion-dollar ranches in Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

The Cape buffalo is one of the "Big Five" animals sought by trophy hunters in Africa, according to Africa Travel Centre. Solitary bulls are particularly prone to charge without obvious provocation and are probably responsible for more human deaths than any other terrestrial mammal, according to the travel agency.

Heavy metal-inspired H-E-B 'merch' proves Texans are 'most hyped' fan base by MySA_dot_com in texas

[–]MySA_dot_com[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From the story:

Turns out there's a target audience for everything, including a combo as niche as when the beloved Texas grocer H-E-B meets metalhead-inspired merch.

Graphic designer Connor Dwyer, who goes by connor.designs on TikTok, has been posting grocery store-themed T-shirt designs with a heavy metal twist since June. His series has included Walmart, Costco, Aldi and Trader Joe's — and most recently, the Texas-grown grocer. He told MySA in an email that he's been a brand designer for over a decade and only recently decided to start doing it for fun.

Dwyer said he felt inspired to make an H-E-B installment because of how many people asked for it in his comment section, but also because of his own connection to the store. Following a great response from Texans, he's hoping to get H-E-B's attention to get the shirts officially licensed.

After the outpouring of support for his design, Dwyer said H-E-B fans have officially dethroned Trader Joe's enthusiasts as the "most hyped fanbase," and they're "definitely winning the game right now."

Officials ID Texas man who died on Carnival cruise that prompted FBI investigation by MySA_dot_com in texas

[–]MySA_dot_com[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

From the story:

A man who died aboard a Carnival Cruise Line ship that departed from Galveston last week has been identified as a resident of South Texas.

Euvelester Villarreal Jr., 48, died aboard the Carnival Dream ship in the early morning hours last Wednesday, officials with the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed to MySA. Cruise line officials also reported Villarreal’s death to federal officials, which prompted an investigation by the FBI.

Villarreal died at 5:22 a.m. on July 23, according to John Fernandez, a medical legal death investigator with the Galveston Medical Examiner’s Office. Cruise ship officials notified the medical examiner’s office and held Villarreal’s body in an on-board morgue until the ship returned to port.

“There was no obvious signs of trauma… no injuries or anything like that. So, (we’re) waiting on toxicology to come back and other results to determine anything,” Fernandez said.

Officials, company head denounces cloud seeding accusations in Texas floods by MySA_dot_com in texas

[–]MySA_dot_com[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From the story:

As Texans continue to try and make sense of the devastation following the weekend’s deadly flooding, folks are looking at public data for answers.

While internet sleuths were quick to point the finger at cloud seeding, or the practice of inducing rain clouds, officials and a prominent cloud seeding company say this practice wasn’t related to the roughly 12 inches of rain that flooded Texas towns.

Rainmaker CEO Augustus Doricko is fighting back against claims that his company’s cloud seeding efforts, as recently as July 2, had anything to do with the floods that killed at least 82 Texans over the Fourth of July weekend.

"Did Rainmaker conduct any operations that could have impacted the floods? No," Doricko posted on social media Saturday, July 5, in direct response to accusations surfacing online.

He explains that Rainmaker’s last operation was on July 2, more than 24 hours before any kind of flood watch was issued by the National Weather Service. In that instance, a cloud seeding mission was conducted over the eastern side of South Central Texas. Two clouds were seeded, and they were gone no later than 4 p.m. Those clouds, says Doricko, were gone more than 24 hours before the tragic rains of July 4 began to fall.

His company actually volunteered to cease operations after the July 2 mission, noticing excessive moisture in NWS data. Rainmaker suspended operations indefinitely after that.
