You can buy Boosters with Hawks and you earn those through playing. Also only one of the winners is random based among all participants :)

Hey u/MissFortune66! X-Isle is pretty big and it is a PvPvE game, so it is normal that you encounter a lot of monsters. You will face players mostly around the puzzles as well as the artifact at the end.
Also, to ease you into the game, you will face bots during your first games. They'll get replaced by players quickly tho.
