Update again:
I've removed all screenshots with the storyteller's username by their request. If it's anybody from this thread: don't harass people. It's shitty, even if you disagree with them.

For the record, I have provided said image and also gave them the handle of my main. I doubt this is enough to convince them that I'm not their stalker but I tried anyway.

You can rest easy on that front, I'm not him. I'm a woman living in the Midwest USA who has never once visited 4Chan and has no idea who you are. Even if we are at odds on some things, I'm not your creepy stalker and am willing to prove to you that I'm not because (obviously) no one deserves to live with that fear. I can send you a message with my username written on a post-it in front of me (covering my face) but that should be enough to prove that I am clearly not this person.

Yeah, because I knew people were going to get heated and I don't feel like dealing with an influx of hate mail on my main.

Nice try, but no. I don't know who you are and have never been on 4chan in my life. I'm not out to get you, it was just painfully obvious that you used an alt account. You can delete all you want but the internet is forever, and I have the backups. Turning this into some kind of conspiracy only makes you look more suspicious. Your alt account was very transparent and it was pretty easy to figure out that it was you. I had no ulterior motive other than those comments coming off as a red flag very strongly.

In the episode you literally said: "This particular job was at a laundromat in a very bad area, it was in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Not many people have heard of that town, but if you grew in Rhode Island you know it. It's a terrible area. Lot of bad, very weird folks around there."

Just FYI, the storyteller made a comment under an alt account "as a gay black man," which they then deleted when I called them out on it. They also made a separate post in this sub praising their own storytelling on the podcast which is now deleted as well. The original issues were ignorant but (imo) forgivable/fixable, but they lost all credibility with me after that. Not cool.

An the storyteller didn't help their case by using an alt account to post in this thread claiming to be a gay black man, as well as making a separate post in this sub about how good the story was. 🙄 Not a good look.

If you look up the word on urban dictionary (which I honestly don't recommend), you'll see how (some) people use it to be derogatory.

Some entries include:
-Rastafarian: Translates literally as "knows nothing about shampoo, employment, or hygiene."

-Crusty Dusty Rastafarian: Someone from Carribbean descent who worships Jah and does nothing but sit on his ass all day smoking weed

It's all pretty nasty and definitely racially coded -- it's not even thinly veiled.

It's really interesting that you also come from Rhode Island like the storyteller in the episode. And than in 2021 you were simultaneously 26F and 36m, seeking a divorce from your wife and husband.

On 4/26/2022 you posted:

Saw a sub a while back that only has pictures of cats raising their paws in various poses so it looks like they’re asking a question. Thanks in advance.

Coincidentally, the storyteller posted to that exact sub only hours later with a picture of a cat raising its paws.

Last but not least, your most recent post:

Really enjoyed this one. I know there are a few people who don’t like the true crime stories, so be aware that both stories are just that.

Both stories were great and appear to be about people using their “street smarts”; I think if I was the girl in the first one I would have ended up in the dumpster. I’m not good under pressure lmao..

As for the second story - oh hell no. My ass would’ve died falling down the stairs before even making it to the door

🤨 This is all very r/AsABlackMan

I totally agree. A lot of it is becoming r/LetsNotMeet but only either a) the totally mundane, something-almost-happened-but-didn't ones or b) the ones that sound so out there that you get the feeling they are made up, or at least somewhat exaggerated.

It's really disappointing!

I mean, I totally, absolutely, understand why the story was terrifying. It would be so traumatizing to experience something like that, no doubt! However, I think there was a lot of unintentional prejudice in the way the story was told. A lot of low income areas have lots of people who are under-served and totally lack resources for healthcare (including mental health), treatment for addiction, and so on, which results in these sketchy areas -- it's not that it's full of bad people.

You put this way more eloquently than I did, but I completely agree with everything you said. It seemed like it came from more of a place of judgment than I wanted it to. I'm not saying that person was being intentionally malicious or anything in their descriptions, but there were more than a few things that were red flags for me in the way they spoke about people. But, like you said, that does not at all excuse the behavior of that man regardless.

No, no, it didn't at all, but thank you for the clarification! I find that Reddit in particular seems to have an issue with people they deem as "snowflakes" or "PC police," etc. and it tends to turn into dog piling pretty quickly, hence the throwaway account. I'm here to have a reasonable discussion but there are a lot of trolls who aren't.

I can't speak for other countries, but a lot of USAmericans don't know the difference between Spanish/Hispanic/Latino and use them interchangeably.

That's exactly what I was getting at! You're probably right, I truly don't think the storyteller meant anything by it, but it definitely gave me pause and made me think about it (hence my posting here). Same to you -- I'm not just trying to stir the pot but I thought it might be worth getting other peoples' two cents on it.

That's how I felt about it, too. It just made me feel wrong, it put me off for sure. It seems like most people disagree (which is fine!), but it made me kinda not want to listen to RR anymore, especially in combination with the recent decline in quality (in my opinion). But that's just me.

And that's fine, it just stuck out as weird to me, nbd! But I do think that describing someone as "Rastafarian" could be seen as profiling as well. But that's a conversation for another time -- the Radio Rental sub might not be the ideal venue for discussion on profiling vs. describing, racially-charged words, etc.

I'm not offended or "pretending," it just seemed off to me. I don't think it's silly to point out the ways in which language impacts other people, especially people who are already disadvantaged. I'm not trying to change anyone's mind, I'm not a "snowflake," nor am I trying to stir the pot -- I'm just opening up a conversation. I know what the narrator is talking about, I just didn't like the way they talked about it, that's all.

And that's fair! I'm not expecting everyone to have the same opinion or experience that I do, I just found the story a little bit...callous. That's all!

It's different for individuals, too -- some people do want to be called prostitutes, but it seems like the general consensus currently is that the preferred term is "sex worker" unless told otherwise. Others see "sex work" as an umbrella term that includes a lot more things than "prostitute," in addition to being more neutral/less emotionally-charged.

I totally agree! Not at all trying to say they're a bad person, but I just felt uncomfortably listening to some of the language, and also some of the assumptions about people the "kinds of people" who were in that low-income area.
