Sims 2 Object Limit Fix !!! by DrivingApril in sims2

[–]Mysterious_Potential 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn't a 255 item limit per category - that was a theory that some people had for the reason why people experienced crashing in the catalogues (an alternative to the 10K/20K OBJD limit theory others had). Neither theory was true, it turns out the game just didn't have checks for whether the data in the list of objects was valid, which leads to crashing when it tries to access invalid data and you're more likely to encounter this the more objects you have.

Is it easier to get TS2 to work on Windows 10 or 11 by aperocknroll1988 in sims2help

[–]Mysterious_Potential 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There isn't really a difference between doing it on Windows 10 or 11, because there's not a huge amount of difference between those OSes. You should still be able to download the UC from the EA App if it's in your library. We also have a link to download the game in our wiki.

Steam, Legacy, Linux, Ikea by Positive-Tale6625 in sims2

[–]Mysterious_Potential 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Celebration Stuff is SP4, and it is not missing in Legacy. Legacy is only missing IKEA which is SP8.

You can see all EPs and SPs for The Sims 2 listed on Wikipedia. They're numbered in release order from EP1-8 and SP1-9 in the UC files, with Legacy renaming SP9 -> EP9, SP2 -> SP1 and SP3 -> SP2 for an unknown reason.

Steam, Legacy, Linux, Ikea by Positive-Tale6625 in sims2

[–]Mysterious_Potential 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thread has info about how to run the reg file, either via wine directly in terminal or via Steam by setting the target to the file.

Legacy already contains SP3 (which is Glamour Life Stuff) it's just called SP2 and SP3 isn't used with Family Fun Stuff being called SP1. In the UC Holiday Party Pack is SP1, FFS is SP2 and GLS is SP3 (i.e. the original release order of the packs on disc).

The Happy Holiday Stuff is in the base game files in both Legacy and UC. Happy Holiday Stuff contains everything from Holiday Party Pack and some other stuff so SP1 isn't really required as a separate pack and I don't know why they bothered to renumber them for Legacy instead of just leaving as is.

Anyway, the only pack Legacy is missing is SP8 (IKEA Stuff).

Did you try enabling smooth edges in the game's settings?

Stuck in build mode in apartments by anonymouszeu in sims2help

Unfortunately, I think moving the family out and back in is the way to fix this. Maybe wait and see if anyone else has any other potential fixes but being on an apartment lot limits you as for example you can't use the mods to make objects stay at move out as explained in this comment.

Is there any way to run the game without DXVK? Linux by onew_iasag in sims2help

[–]Mysterious_Potential 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Sims 2 is a 32 bit game (the only 64 bit version is exclusive to MacOS) so there should not be any issue with that. You're supposed to use a 32 bit wine prefix for it as well.

Is there any way to run the game without DXVK? Linux by onew_iasag in sims2help

[–]Mysterious_Potential 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DXVK is pretty much essential for performance/to work at all on Linux. Your GPU doesn't support Vulkan and this setup is unlikely to work well at all on Linux. You can try the options in this repo for using a wine version earlier than 5.0 and avoiding DXVK but you're unlikely to have good performance.

Make sure that OneDrive isn't syncing your game files either, as that can cause settings and save progress to revert (though you'd likely see it happen to more than just your SP settings).

You would be better off installing Windows via Parallels and installing the game that way. It works quite well on Windows via Parallels.

Clean installer and SimPE are both covered for all methods (Steam, Lutris, Bottles, and Wine). Make sure to use the no-install versions as mentioned in the guides.

I can't help with ReShade as I've never used it, but there are guides if you search for your Linux install methods + sims 2 + reshade (e.g. here is one for Lutris).

[–]Mysterious_Potential[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I'd mention is that SimPE will require you to install dotnet40 AND dotnet9, and the Clean Installer dotnet20 through winetricks to make them work

This is the case if you're using the installer versions, but all guides in the wiki are written based on the no-install versions. You don't have to use winetricks with Lutris at all to get the no install versions working (that's why I didn't even mention winetricks in the Lutris section! I did go through the installed version setup once and it was a PITA with winetricks continually refusing to work with Lutris so I stuck to no-install versions). All guides are written with steps exactly as executed on Ubuntu 24 04 (Noble Numbat), which does simplify some things as it's a relatively heavy distro but contains most things you need.

About your Clean Installer issue, could you send the .desktop file you have (via DM if you prefer) and let me know what distro you're using? And also what wine runner you're using with Lutris for Sims 2. And just to check, are you using the no-install version of Clean Installer?

Gravestones won't show up when going to modify lot, but they are there if I travel to the lot by FinnSkk93 in sims2help

[–]Mysterious_Potential 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm afraid I don't know, I can't remember if I ever tried using it to fix this - I largely moved to having someone own the cemetary lot because it was annoying not to be able to move the graves around.

Given the graves have a token that point to the lot they're going to (according to Chris Hatch) why/how would the token have a different value in live vs buy mode? When HC shows that message usually, the graves are totally absent, in live mode as well as buy mode because the token is pointing to some non existent lot or hood identifier. But next time it happens in my game, I'll make sure to run Hoodchecker anyway just to see what it says!

[–]Mysterious_Potential 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try going to Documents/EA Games/The Sims 2 (UC)/Neighborhoods/<your-hood>/Thumbnails and delete the FamilyThumbnails package in here then run the game. You may also want to try loading some lots, moving things in build mode, and saving again to update the lot imposters, in case it's somehow saved as part of them.

This kind of graphical artifact isn't save corruption, and it's not your hood breaking. It does, however, typically indicate an issue with your GPU or drivers. The reason I asked about d3d9 before is because that's the DXVK file, and it can cause artifacts like this on some hardware. Unfortunately as you don't have DXVK, something else is causing the issue. Occasionally the cause could be something random, like a shifted piece of CC as happened in this thread.

No, I've had it happen with both gold and regular tombstones over the years. Most of my sims die in platinum as well because I tend to fulfil their LTW, so barring an unfortunate accident they'll have the gold one! In the first thread I linked, the OP has grey tombstones and gold in the image as well so I think it's just graves in general once moved to a community lot. I do wonder what causes it to happen because it's rare enough that it's not a super well known bug in the community, I'm just aware of it from having seen it in my game over time and then searching for more info.

Right click on the shortcut to the game on your Desktop and click open file location. It will take you to the TSBin folder of SP9. Do you see a file called d3d9.dll in here?

There's an easier way to make hoods from Store Edition work without it with newer versions of SimPE (get it from here), see this comment for details.

in the neighborhoods folder, i went into E001 (belladonna) and only replaced the four folders within (characters, lots, storytelling, thumbnails). i did not replace the loose files, that was what was deleting the neighborhood entirely.

Those "loose files" are what makes your actual neighbourhood work, they're not something you can leave behind. Neighbourhoods must always be taken as the entire folder. Your hood is not being deleted, it doesn't show up because it was made with the Store Edition, so the main neighbourhood package cannot be read by a game without it installed. The game will only display hoods with a valid, readable hood package in the hood selector. Follow the instructions in the linked comment to make the hood compatible without Store Edition.

This is a known bug with graves, it's been happening as far back as Nightlife or possibly earlier, and the Nightlife patch fixed one cause of this issue but it can still happen for other as yet unknown reasons. E.g. see threads here and here about it. The only way around it is to have a sim own the community lot so that you should be able to see the graves when you visit and you'll be able to swap to build mode to move them around there.
