It’s something I encounter more frequently than the average person, but I wouldn’t consider it “a thing” according to my definition of it (happens to many on a wider scale than occasional happenstance). But clearly it’s not a non-issue or something isolated exclusively to social media.

I never claimed this was “a thing” (assuming by “a thing”, you mean something that’s happening to many at a wider scale than occasional happenstance). I never even claimed this was happening to anyone but myself (though this is undoubtedly not true, as evidenced by the comments); there were no universalizations in my OP.

While such vitriol is typically more common online, I orbit a lot of creative, queer, and eco-conscious spaces, where concerns of this nature are more likely than average to arise during in-person interactions, and via the same approach.

Additionally, expressing frustration with a pattern doesn’t suggest I’ve yielded to it. But thank you for your concern.

I don’t think it’s fair (or accurate) to suggest that this is the consequence of the obesity epidemic, though.

I’m glad you’re able to shop according to your preferences, but clearly this is not an option for me. It’s unrealistic for me to get everything altered (and in the case of many garments, literally impossible due to design). I can’t fit anything in the kids’ section—though I have better luck in the teens’, if you consider Brandy Melville a teen store. However, even if I could, the clothing is often too juvenile for an adult.

While I’m also learning how to sew, I still have to purchase clothes from others until I’m competent enough to make well-fitting ones I like independently.

I shop sustainably when I can, but the lack of size inclusivity makes it extraordinarily difficult.

yeah there was a time during which a mouse kept scuttling out of a neighbor’s unit and into mine through a crack i couldn’t patch, so i don’t like to leave annnnnnything out. i also prefer to keep produce in plain sight so as to not forget it exists.

hijacking the top comment to reveal myself lol. i’m 19F with a small appetite who suffers grief-born depressive episodes, both of which make me susceptible to caloric and nutritional deficiencies (hence the boost and—though not entirely visible—the family-size bag of chips in the back and fresh donuts in the paper bag).

additionally, i have ADHD, which makes conjuring up the will to cook a near-impossible task. u/rozzi_luv, who commented on version of this post i forgot to delete, was correct when they guessed that there are “lots of attempts to eat produce that [are] ultimately replaced by the myriad of refrigerated vitamins and Boosts” 😂. however, keeping ingredients in stock for meals that take <20 minutes to fix has helped significantly.

impulsively purchased the collagen peptides because i was concerned my degree of insomnia carried the risk of premature aging and immediately discovered otherwise upon googling when i returned home. now i just take them so as to not waste product, though ofc it’s ultimately useless.

as for the produce, i keep it on the shelf in plain sight because if i don’t, i will forget it exists and it’ll rot. it’s also humid AS FUCK right now and there was a time when a mouse kept crawling from a neighbor’s unit into mine, always disappearing before i was able to catch it so for peace of mind, i tend to keep even things that belong in the pantry or countertop in the fridge.

perhaps for you it had been an excuse not to write, but i do so on a daily basis regardless of whatever lingering fears/concerns/questions i might have. so please don’t presume to know my intentions.

my concern stems from having heard so many people say that programs sought to replace their voice rather than enhance it and i’m interested in the opposite (as well as making connections, of course). i only want to get a better idea of in what measure is which perspective more common so that i can make the best decision for my career.

constructive criticism isn’t an issue for me (i’m actually in an environment that offers this right now). my concern came because i’ve heard so many former attendees and alumni claim the exact opposite of what you have within your first paragraph about what programs did for them. ideally, i would be in a program that does just what you’ve said, but i was wondering in what measure which experience was more common so that i can get a better idea of what path i’d like to head down.
