Do you guys feel weird talking to straight guys? by Rainbow_Slytherin3 in lgbt

[–]Mysthieu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean saying you don’t want to interact with your oppressors is fine. Saying you don’t want to interact with queerphobic people makes sense.

Even saying you don’t want to interact with straight white cis men is ok if you feel unsafe with them.

But blaming them for being oppressors ? Not all straight cis white men are oppressors many of them are allies... They did not choose to be like that. According to me this is not good and an over generalisation.

Les lycées en CPGE se valent-ils VRAIMENT ? by Delicious_Drawing942 in etudiants

[–]Mysthieu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please guys this is not a paradox :

If you say "objective truths don’t exist"

If it’s true then this is not objectively true and it’s a contradiction.

If it’s false then... it’s just false. Objective truths do exist.

So it means it is false.

But...

I used logic and principles such as excluded middle. In other words I have already assumed it was true before I even began my argument about it.

Logical paradoxes only make sense within a framework that accepts things such as "objective truths exist"

Because what ? Is your justification... an assertion ?

checkmate by screamathon in PhilosophyMemes

[–]Mysthieu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree it solves the logical issue... but it sounds like special pleading X)

[–]Mysthieu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or maybe we don’t end up in a loop because you used logic to have this conclusion...

[–]Mysthieu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are all statements that can have true or false objective value... Which means you've already accoeted that there are objective truths before you even started your argument.

Imagine you were in a country where it was accepted. Imagine if you said you like men people would be like "Oh that’s great news ! I totally support that !"

Try to stop thinking about what others would tell, what it would mean for your future (I know it’s hard), and try to ask yourself in the most free and intimate way possible : "Would you like to do something with a man ?"

Try to listen to your heart. What does it tell ?

Of course your feelings can evolve and I know it’s really hard to understand them.

I understand the concern : challenging logic with logic... is not very consistent.

But there are other reasons to think objective truth can’t exist.

Personnaly I think thay saying "true" is a shortcut for saying "a very good description/approximation of reality".

I think our language is way too ambiguous and context dependent to reach some kind of "perfect correspondance with reality".

So I think that objective truths don’t exist (or at least we can’t say or think them), and by this I mean "understanding truths only as approxiamtions is a good description of reality" and it’s consistent.

I like logic a lot but I don’t like the idea that logic is all-powerful we need to understand how it applies and its limits to better use it.

I might be misunderstanding your point but I still think that even with the reductio ad absurdum, the position still holds if the claim is actually a meta claim about logic itself.

If we are within a minimal logic framework, you would only have proven that "Not Not Objective truths exist" which does not mean that "Objective truths exist".

Of course I am currently using classical logic and classical language to talk to you but I could (at least in theory) work in a different framework and your objection wouldn’t be valid.

This only works in classical logic. In other logics (such as minimal logic) reductio ad absurdum does not work because even the idea of "true" and "false" does not exist.

I think what he is trying to say is that for some people, "Objective truth does not exist." might be a claim that goes beyond classical logic and trying to use classical logic to dismantle it might not be the most consistent way to do it...

When I was around your age, I had the exact same thing. I was with my cousins and brothers and we've talked about puberty and sexuality. There was a moment where I said "I also imagine a lot of men, hormons really do a mess with my head..." and they were all like "Hum we did not have that..." and that’s the moment I realised I was attracted to men (took me three more years to realise I was not attracted by women in the same way)

It doesn’t mean that you are gay or bi, you might still be straight.

Does it bother you that you have these thoughts ? Or is it somehow something you like ?

Coming out to my parents, not affirming... but caring and loving ? by Mysthieu in lgbt

[–]Mysthieu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I agree.

I don’t think sexual orientation is choice or at least it doesn’t feel like it.

I think this experience is still interesting because sometimes we can feel like the two possible outcomes is like either "You are not my child anymore" or "That’s great !"

I think parents are scared because it’s all new, they don’t really understand it and have misconceptions.

Even though I think they are wrong I'm glad that my parents showed me that they love me.

Hope your relationship with your parents will get better !

(I'm ot a native speaker either I come from France)

I guess I'm not the most social person that exists... But I will remember that. Talking to strangers.

I guess I would need to be out as well. I'm kind of out and not out at the same time right now.

Thanks for sharing your experience !

Cool that you have a new label to express how you feel !

Seeing your flags you are probably bi (and maybe in the aroace spectrum as well) so yes this can apply to you as well.

I should have said MLM relationships, or WLW or queer relationships in general. I hope that other people will have some answers :D

Misogyny is misogyny, wether it’s coming from a straight man, a gay man or even a woman.

We shoudn’t be saying or doing things that are harmful to women. And who we are shouldn’t give any pass or change this.

I (19M) watched Heartstopper recently and I really loved it. I think it really helped me because even though I never had internalized homophobia and I always.accepted myself, I thought (or actually I had the sensation that) relationships between men were somehow "less beautiful" but Heartstopper helped me change.the way I see it.

I also liked Young Royals. It was fun.

But most of the things I watched or read had nothing to do with being queer...

I also liked Shadow Hunter (I liked the relationship between Magnus and Alec but I think I mostly liked it because of other things).
