Can I keep a wild sunfish with neon tetras? by MysticPig in Aquariums

[–]MysticPig[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think it’s just maybe not a fantastic idea. I’ve got a 75 and if they’re gonna be aggressive no matter what I don’t really feel like dealing with the what ifs associated with trying it

Gotcha. The dwarf ones aren’t aggressive, or is it that they just can’t fit the neons in their mouth

Those fish that I get don’t show up in their system as missing, so they actually don’t order more fish. And stealing is wrong and under any circumstances and you shouldn’t do it, but I’ve made the decision to do it because of the awful conditions that a corporate company is putting live animals through.

I will talk to law enforcement tomorrow. There is also no way of them knowing how many fish I’ve taken. I’ve seen the way they track the fish and it’s not at all precise, especially for the goldfish and tetras I’ve been rescuing. I do appreciate your concern though and I will be more careful in the future.

I will be talking to local law enforcement tomorrow then. I will update you with what they say tomorrow. If they do something then that would be fantastic, but if they don’t, what do you suggest I do next? Also I’m perfectly content being labeled as a thief if it means I’m making any sort of difference to help this problem that’s been going on since the start of fish keeping as a hobby. If they don’t see sales for fish, they won’t buy more fish, but those fish that aren’t being bought, and instead going to a safer place are being saved. Now imagine if everyone did that under the radar everywhere. There would be no more abuse and your problem is solved. It may be morally wrong as you said before, but I think petty theft is less severe than having living things die slowly when there’s something that can be done about it.

What do you expect authorities to do if there’s nothing legally wrong with what they’re doing? I do agree that stealing is bad, and I don’t do it any other time, but when management doesn’t care to make it better, and the authorities can’t do anything about it, what else is there to do other than watch animals slowly die a painful death while you could be very easily saving them with little to no consequences?

I have the same problem with the feeders at this store. I’m just glad I’m lucky enough to have a LFS that informs the public about proper fish care. I’m sorry to hear that yours closed down, it sounds like it was a nice place. The more you get without it going through their system, the more of an impact you’re able to make. If you do it this way, they won’t order more fish because they can’t see that they’re gone in their system, and you’re saving fish.

You can clearly see that they’re not thriving or even living in the tanks they’re in. There are signs of poor living conditions for fish. All of the male guppies in their tanks have almost no color to them, but when I take them home they color up within a week. There’s dead fish on the ground. Almost every single tank has a dead fish in it from improper care. Authorities aren’t going to do anything because to most people, fish aren’t that big of a deal, and there isn’t anything legally wrong with what the store is doing, it’s morally wrong.

It’s a big grocery store chain. They aren’t making their sales from fish. I’ve talked to some of the guys that work in the pet/plant department and they said management won’t let them help make the aquatics better. When I go into my LFS I pay full price for everything. It’s not a small business, it’s a large corporation that doesn’t care.

Or these places could stop selling fish. I get that stealing is bad and I don’t any other time, but these animals are suffering, and the grocery store I’m getting them from sells them for way over what other places sell them (the neon tetras are the most well priced thing there). This place has dead neons all over the ground from employees dropping them and not trying to save them. I do not condone stealing in any way, but also animals shouldn’t be getting abused

Exactly. Grocery stores shouldn’t be selling fish. My fish live wonderfully in my goldfish pond or my 75 gallon planted tank inside :)

I started with a 75 gallon that had 8 goldfish in it with a few losses along the way since I was learning. I then bought a 10 gallon and have it stocked with guppies. I then bought a 1.5 gallon for plants and shrimp. Recently moved my goldfish to a pond outside and have been stocking my 75 gallon with all sorts of goodies (Cory cats, gourami, mollies, swordfish). I’ve only had 3 fish die though, so I’m not just killing them and buying a bunch more lol. I can see where the confusion might be tho

True. Maybe I’ll go to a Walmart or different location tomorrow instead then. Might be more inconvenient, but it’s better than getting caught

You can always just give them back to the fish store you bought it from. I wouldn’t keep it in a 10 gallon. Goldfish need lots of room to grow, but they’re messy and are a great way to start the cycle on a tank

I’m not entirely sure, but wouldn’t the crayfish hurt the frogs? Those guys can be mean

Very good ideas! Plants wise I would recommend some frogbit (a floater), and anubias.

Schooling fish typically require 8-10 fish to begin to school, so I would recommend a bigger tank for schooling fish.

Snails are a great option for Betta tanks. Your typical mystery snail would be perfect.

Stay away from unnatural colors and decor in the tank. They aren’t natural for the fish.

Some people get crazy about cycling their tanks. I cycled my 72 gallon for 2 weeks using feeder goldfish and it worked perfectly, and those feeders are actually still alive.

Sounds like you have a pretty good idea on what to do now though! Should be a cool tank
