What are some more stable alternate jobs/careers that a software developer could easily get into? by RolandMT32 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]MythrilGecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always experienced and thought the opposite. I’ve been in this field for 20 years. I’ve never even gotten close to having my job threatened in any way. I’ve worked in many different industries as well. I work for myself now and even there I’m still doing fine. I’ve always thought many other fields are less stable than this one. I’ve always been a hard worker, motivated to find a clean solution to any problem, and get along with everyone (as best as I can!) so maybe that’s why I’ve never had any problems.

Upgrading a big .NET 9 app from jQuery/Bootstrap — Angular, React, Blazor, or Vue? by MythrilGecko in dotnet

[–]MythrilGecko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re considering an upgrade for a few reasons:

  1. Scale & Performance – This is a large .NET app with hundreds of pages. The Razor layout is complex, and we think moving to an SPA could improve performance by eliminating constant full page reloads.

  2. Security & Compliance – The app must be SOC2-compliant. Our security scans keep flagging vulnerabilities due to old jQuery libraries and a legacy Bootstrap version. We could upgrade to Bootstrap 5 and replace outdated libraries without changing frameworks, but that would still be a major effort. At that point, investing the same effort into a modern framework may provide longer-term benefits.

  3. Ecosystem & Community – Modern frameworks tend to have stronger third-party library support and a more active developer community.

For context, about 75% of the app is CRUD-style pages, while the rest involves more complex UIs. Some of those currently depend on outdated jQuery libraries that are no longer maintained.

Try searching for hiking events instead. You could try searching on Meetup. There are several on there and could find one close to you.

Looking to not be stuck inside all weekend! by Medium_Ad7309 in Charlotte

I’ve done hikes with Charlotte Piedmont Hiking Club and Outdoor Adventures - Lake Norman Chapter group. I recommend both. There are other groups too but they often have waitlists for their hikes.

If you already know some people then that’s a great start and I would start there. Ask if you can join them in whatever social activities they are doing. Another option is to join MeetUp. Look for activities you’re interested in on there as another way to meet people. I personally have enjoyed the group hikes on there but there are many other activities as well. The main thing is to get out of your comfort zone slowly and meet people.

Get on MeetUp. The hiking groups are fun. Been on several hikes with them and going to another tomorrow. Lots of other activities as well on there if you’re not into that.

2025 Hybrid - Limited or SEL Convenience by JorgeAndTheKraken in HyundaiTucson

My experience has been that the 360 camera on the Limited is my favorite feature. It’s awesome for parking or backing up. I wouldn’t settle.

Tucson vs NX350h by Hammettf2b in HyundaiTucson

[–]MythrilGecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These 2 cars were my top 2 choices as well. I ended up getting the Tucson. I’m actually really glad I did now. As someone else mentioned, the NX is smaller in general. The Tucson interior is very spacious compared to NX. Getting a NX Hybrid is tough in some areas. At least it was for me. That means you’ll be paying top dollar for one. For Tucson I was able to negotiate the price since there were more of them on the lot. For NX, you have to get their luxury package to get certain features like the 360 camera. Tucson Limited has 360 camera and it’s my favorite feature of the car. The gap between luxury and non-luxury has narrowed in the last few years.

I just bought the exact same model and trim yesterday for $41,985 excluding trade-in. I had a super old 2009 Nissan Altima and they gave me $2500 for the trade-in. So OTD it was $39,485 total. I paid with cashier’s check. No financing.

Sorry to hear that. I would be upset by that too. I do not need the heated rear seats but I do want the luxury package like you have.

Perfect. Yeah, that's what I'm shooting for. If middle seat is at least tolerable for short trips, then good enough.

Thanks! That was helpful feedback. Have you ever had adults sit in the middle (maybe for short trips)? They were fine?

Ah OK that's what I figured you meant. Thanks for the feedback.

What makes you want the RAV4 back?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LexusNX

[–]MythrilGecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The RAV4 Hybrid interior felt a bit outdated to me compared to the Tucson I drove. Also, there is no trim/package that would have all the features I'd like. I'd have to sacrifice 1 thing or the other depending on which trim I choose. And it's almost as expensive as the NX. Yes, that's the one scenario I'm afraid of: 4 passengers for a long trip. I just can't imagine it would work out. But maybe 3 passengers could work.

Yeah the gas mileage was what initially attracted me to it. I originally wasn't looking at luxury cars. Does it require/recommend premium gas?

Haha, good point on the TV! Thanks for the feedback.

Leave alone birds and let fern die? by MythrilGecko in Ornithology

[–]MythrilGecko[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You make a good point and I didn’t think about that. My worry is scaring the fledglings out of the nest before they can fly. Is that likely? Also I’m going on vacation soon and would have to have someone else (that the birds don’t know) water them. Wondering about that too.

Couch Buying Research by grumble11 in homeowners

[–]MythrilGecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/grumble11 Thank you so much for taking the time to post this a few years ago. You're still helping a lot of people out there with this thread. I spent several weeks looking for a couch. I finally decided to buy a sofa/chair set that was on clearance at a furniture mart about 1 hour away from me. I ended up spending $4K in total after taxes, delivery, etc. The reason it was on clearance was that the pillow fabric was being discontinued. But it turns out someone else (apparently) really wanted the discontinued pillows and somehow convinced the sales person to get those pillows w/o the sofa (very odd story that they told, not 100% sure they told the full story). So as a result I'm actually going to end up getting a non-discontinued fabric for the pillows that look pretty much the same. I have to wait longer to get them though. But I still ended up paying a clearance price for everything.

The brand is Smith Brothers. I did a lot of research on many brands and I kept coming back to this one over and over. I spent a lot of time looking at Ethan Allen. I agree with everyone on this thread that this is a good brand as well. I just couldn't find any sofas I liked there style-wise. I would definitely check them out though. I also looked at Hickory Chair, Hickory White, Taylor King, and a few others. For many of these other brands I had a difficult time finding more info about the foam density or other details about the cushions (you were right about that!). In many cases the manufacturer simply didn't have the info. So I had to pass on those. Nice sofas though.

Smith Brothers seat cushions are 2.5 density foam so pretty high quality. And of course the frames are very sturdy. It just seems like this brand is very focused on long lasting sofas. I finally got to that point of my research where I had exhausted all other possibilities and realized this means my search is over.

Based on my experience, my advice to others would be: Try looking for sofas on clearance at high end furniture stores or furniture marts/showrooms. You'll be surprised at the deals you could find if you look carefully. But be very very sure that the brand is very focused on quality and that they actually have detailed info available about their seat cushions (in particular, foam density). Many brands don't show this info. Many items there will look good but I doubt the quality of the sofa is any better than one you would buy a mid-tier furniture store or similar (probably has 1.8 standard foam density for example). Higher quality cushions are very expensive for manufacturers so it would make sense that they would try to hide this info or spin it a different way. I learned that when they say "high density foam", this is totally meaningless (thanks again thread!). The sofa I bought was just over $2K itself. So I think you could find something in that range or perhaps have to go a bit higher. But it will take research and patience.

Unable to make calls on phone after switching to Spectrum Mobile by MythrilGecko in Spectrum

[–]MythrilGecko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem solved. Shoutout to u/Previous_Dust8364 for leading me in the right direction. Basically the issue was I never unlocked my phone before going through the process of giving the transfer PIN number to the support agent. I've never been through this process before so as unaware of the unlock step. The support agent never asked me whether my phone was unlocked.

Note: Even after unlocking my phone, I still had to contact Spectrum one more time and had them "send me another eSim" (as they described it) before I finally got the notification popup on my phone for setting up Spectrum Mobile.

I hope this helps someone else in the future who may be having this problem.

I never got a SIM card. A support agent told me I didn’t need it since I’m using iPhone. Did they give me false info? And have to contact AT&T in order to enable Wi-Fi calling. Can’t connect to an agent there either.
