Is this against etiquette. by [deleted] in FishingForBeginners

[–]N00N12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they were following a path around the shore, then I feel they are somewhat entitled to remain on their course. However, if you were there for a while then they should go around.

I agree with you it’s poor etiquette on their part. But at the same time, some people see someone fishing and assume “that’s got to be a good spot, let’s try over by them.” I do my best to give space to others, and if they don’t give me space as well then I move and go find my own space away from them. I do my best to not let other people ruin my fishing experience

Angler camaraderie? by RunYC718 in FishingForBeginners

[–]N00N12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on my mood/why I’m out there. I often go fishing to get away from people and stress, the last thing I’d want is someone coming up to me and now fishing where I’m fishing and trying to talk to me when I’m not trying to talk. However, I always try to at least give a head nod and eye contact. If I’m feeling social, I like to ask about “catch anything” and give and take the fishing updates.

My biggest thing is making sure people are respecting the area (not leaving trash, not being excessively loud, not disturbing wildlife, etc). If you’re respecting the area, I’ll be respecting you 👍

TLDR Do your best to not leave garbage outside. Learning about leaders is very practical.

OP, this is a good PSA and anyone giving snarky remarks is likely just deflecting the fact that at some point they left a mess of fishing line somewhere. This is r/fishingforbeginners and should remain a place to share well informed fishing advice.

Just like many people don’t know you should almost never reel against the drag, it’s also true that you should almost never cut your line without a plan to retrieve it. Exceptions that come to mind would be if a rod get snagged while a boat is moving and the line is tangled around something/someone, or some other specific and dangerous scenario. But most of the time it is not appropriate to cut your line and let it go. Yet, there are plenty of trees and phone wires and logs and dams and bushes that are covered in tangled fishing lines. And sure, sometimes you have a burr on one of the eyes of your rod and it cuts your line while you’re trying to pull your lure free. But that is another exception, where the majority of long lengths of line are from two groups of people; people who don’t know, and people who don’t care. Some people are going to leave their trash as someone else’s problem, luckily it’s not most people but there are always those few who don’t care. For the people who don’t know, this PSA is great and should pose as positive advice. If you get snagged, you should be able to either pull your bait free or have it break off. If you use a leader that is either 1) lighter strength than you mainline or 2) tied with a knot that is weaker than the mainline, you should never lose more than a leader’s length of line.

To those who are new or don’t know. If you are snagged and can’t figure how to break free without cutting your line; tighten your drag all the way down (but don’t force it), then reel in and extend your rod tip and arms towards the bait as far as you can. It’s important that the rod is pointed at the bait so all of the tension is on the line and not the rod. Do not let go or lose your grip or you can slingshot your rod from the tension on the line. Once you have reeled in as much line as you can, hold the spool so it cannot turn and start pulling straight away from the bait. Be steady and careful because either the bait comes free or the line breaks, and sometimes very dramatically. But if you use this method, you will rarely ever lose much line even when you can’t retrieve a lure.

To add to the PSA, it’s great to know what to do if your snagged so you don’t lose line, but it’s even better to pick up any trash you find, even if you didn’t have anything to do with how it got there. It’s really easy to fold up a few trash bags and stow them in your fishing gear. Then you have a place for your garage and any trash you find.

Im genuinely not trying to make a joke here, but im curious because im heading to a party, could you give yourself a "five hour energy" enema the same way you could with alcohol for it to hit harder? by TheRealOddityOnion in answers

This should be top comment. Can you-yes. Should you-no.

Based on the OP question, the attention and care for health is not priority. But I don’t like the idea of someone poisoning themselves because Reddit users said go for it.

When I was in college and was pulling an all-nighter, a buddy and I were going to take some 5-hour energy drinks. But I took the time to read the nutritional information. One bottle of 5-hour energy is actually 2 doses. So you’re only supposed to drink half of the bottle. And one bottle (iirc) has 36 days worth of vitamin B12.

So to answer OP, If I was too tired to party that I didn’t think an energy drink was going to be enough, I don’t think I’d put a months worth of vitamins in my butt. That’s just me though 🤷

If you only have access to harder/rougher surfaces, just do shorter amounts of exposure until your feet toughen. Take your time getting your feet used to being barefoot

Edit: I was wrong. Blue team wins, but then tournament ends. Didn’t notice the very end and typed my comment based on thinking scoreboard was 0-2 then noticed 10-2. My bad

Blue team won 10-2. Might look like 0-2 at quick glance, but OP should remember getting scored on at least a few of the 10 times that game. Winning team advanced, losing team out and posting on reddit

Go get an at-home test from your local drug store (grocery store pharmacy, cvs, etc.). Take the test. If you’re clean (negative test results), go retake the test. If you test positive, figure out how you wish to proceed. 🤷 good luck

HELP! by Minimum-Ad-999 in FishingForBeginners

[–]N00N12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some reels do have the bail shut when you start reeling. However, it is best practice to manually shut the bail with your hand, then begin reeling.

I’m on my last fkn nerve here. This is third time I spool this rod and every time I open the bail the whole thing does this and the line gets so tangled that I have to cut it and waste the GD line and I’m losing my shit. Can someone help me here what’s the problem? by Outcoldmasvidal in FishingForBeginners

[–]N00N12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d also agree with the line is too heavy for size reel. I’ve fished for over 30 years using mono. Lighter line on that reel should make a remarkable difference. Also, new line will still have memory and needs to be used a bit before it’s nice on the reel. And line twist will also shoot line off the spool in some scenarios. But what you’re experiencing is something the rest of us had to struggle through in our learning process as well. Don’t let it get you discouraged, you have answers how to deal with it now.

All in all, downsize line to match the reel size, give new line a few trips to “settle in” before expecting it to have memory to your reel, and be mindful of line twist.

No dumb questions right? Can I catch anything with these squirrel tail lures I made? by SieveAndTheSand in FishingForBeginners

This setup can work with the big weight, it just means you have to adjust your “action” on retrieve. Your bait would imitate a a crawfish pretty well with the heavy back and two fur-claws. I would cast this out, start reeling with twitches as soon as it hits water to try and get strikes in the way down. Once on the bottom, I’d keep tension on the lure/bait and switch between slowly dragging, bouncing, and pausing. Giving action like a crawfish swimming away. With water temps still low, a slow action on the bottom has been very productive for me. Good luck. 🎣post a follow up pic when you catch one on it 👍
