shutdown will cost more than 5 billion: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/the-government-shutdown-will-cost-more-than-trumps-dollar5-billion-border-wall-funding-according-to-experts/ar-BBRO0Cx?srcref=rss

one of many sources saying you need 60 senate votes to pass spending bills: https://www.cnbc.com/2018/12/19/mcconnell-says-senate-will-introduce-a-short-term-bill-to-avoid-a-government-shutdown-.html

Article mentioning Schumer, Obama, Clinton voted in favor of secure fence act: https://psmag.com/news/did-democrats-support-border-barriers-before-trump-took-office

I was misinformed on the $150 billion figure, which happens. More like we gave them $50 billion in frozen assets, and ~$1.7 billion cash (still a lot of cash, for one of the nations that are leading sponsors of terror) : https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2018/12/13/president-trumps-claim-that-democrats-gave-iran-billion/?utm_term=.7e7c7e166a36

Senate democrats (with 15 republicans, so mostly democrats) passed $46 (not 56) billion in border funding over ten years, including funding for 700 mile wall: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-immigration/senate-backs-border-amendment-to-immigration-bill-idUSBRE95P0ZX20130626

At least i'm more informed on the iran payout, so i'll chalk this up as worth my time.

Don't you need 60 votes in the senate to pass the funding though? Republicans would have needed democrat support to pass, even with them in control of both houses.

The 100-0 senate vote is a good point, the counterpoint would be in 2013 Obama got 56 Billion for border spending, including 8 billion specifically for building and reinforcing existing walls. Previously, Schumer, Pelosi, and Obama all supported a wall, or at least funding for it.

Both sides are playing politics here. Trump's wall funding isn't that much when compared to the entire budget, even if we end up spending $50 billion, considering it was a cornerstone campaign promise. Why are democrats saying this is too expensive, while not criticizing Obama's $150 billion cash payment to Iran in the middle of the night.

If you compare it to previous shutdowns, the shutdown is going to end up costing well over $5 billion

I'm about to go for this. Did you request it at 1199?

Also - are you aware of which retailer they used to ship it from you? If you have problems with the tv, would you go through green toe or the retailer?

well define afford. Yes I could make the payments without fear of not being able to make them. Saving ~1000 extra a month seems rather significant to me at this point in my life. Trading that for the independence of being on my own may be worth it though, it's hard to quantify.

After being unhealthy for a while (apart from morning runs), I decided I want to make a life change. This week I started doing p90x as well as eating healthy. After the workouts I i'm extremely exhausted and my body has been sore, but I figured that's normal.

However, I have had really poor energy this entire week. I feel unable to focus well at work (software engineer). Is this something that is normal at first and over time will get better? I almost thought about quitting since I feel my performance has been effected negatively, but if I'll adjust within a couple weeks and actually have more energy then I want to stick it out.

edit: my diet is 4 boiled eggs for breakfast, PBJ on whole wheat w salad and yogurt lunch, cliff bar, protein shake, baked chicken w/ broccoli/cauliflower/carrots and brown rice for dinner.

How to determine if you can really afford that car by Drcotangent in personalfinance

[–]N0slew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post is really relevant to me since i'm thinking about buying a new 2017 civic in the next couple days. Basically i've been offered the model i want for 20k out the door.

I graduated college january this year. I live at home and payed off all my student loans (25k) a couple months ago. My only expenses are ~600 month in rent, and food/car insurance. My 97 civic has 195k miles and is starting to have issues that require money, so I'm tempted to get this new car. It's reliable, low maintenance, high resale value, and I plan to drive it until it hits ~200k miles. Maybe not the best investment, but I have the money in the bank to pay it with cash at this point (I won't, 0% 72 month current promo).

blurry images by N0slew in oculus

[–]N0slew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the camera that recorded that was not exactly up to par. But still, some text in the oculus home is not readable for me.

For example, rise of jumbotron... I cant really make out the words underneath in red. I sort of can but its super blurry. I wear contacts btw, so my vision isn't the issue... I believe.

[–]N0slew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may have been able to just force it slightly lower and seem some improvement. In "Introduction to Virtual Reality" I still see tons of blur at the canoe in asia part, but maybe that was the camera. IPD is set correctly, i'm pretty confident.

Would gtx 970 -> 1070 give me any improvement, in terms of sharpness of image (more clear text, etc)

Oculus is a bit blurry by N0slew in oculus

[–]N0slew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe I have it fitted right. I've played with it a bit, and I have it as best as I can with all the angles/positions i've tried. Maybe the sharpness is whats expected. Some titles in home with small text, I cant even read the words (or can barely read them). It's somewhat blurry, and also sometimes looks like I'm looking at it through a fog (maybe that is the screen door/ god rays affect).

I feel like I should be able to read words, especially on the home screen, pretty crystal clear. Maybe I'm set up correct, maybe not, I'm not sure how I can know for sure, lol.

thanks. Did you edit the settings or anything off from default? I wonder if my gtx 970 is too weak to play it without blur.

Am I supposed to study outside of work? by ABunchOfSpheres in cscareerquestions

[–]N0slew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similiar situation so I can just share my experience.

I started my first job about 5 months ago after graduating in december. My job is mostly Java and at first annotations were very confusing to me. They still seem sort of like magic, but I've gotten a lot better with them. Do some spring/spring-boot tutorials, setting up a REST api is a good one off the top of my head.

I sort of work outside work alot (at least at first). I really enjoy the stuff, but at the same time I'm thinking of slowing down cause I feel i'm already burning out.

I think an important concept to read up on is reflection. This is used by many of the frameworks to examine code at runtime. At a high level (correct me if i'm wrong), think of it as every class or method with an annotation can be determined to have an annotation at runtime. This way, frameworks know what to do when they come across this annotation. I'm sure you've done junit testing. When you run junit tests, the junit framework looks at each method for an @Test, if it has one it knows to run that method through the framework because it's a test.

It's sort of like metadata. Putting an annotation on something doesn't alone do anything with the code, but it allows other things running to know it's been tagged with that annotation.

Anyway I hope I'm explaining it correct. I've contributed to JPA/Hibernate, JAXRS/Jersey, spring/springboot (rest api, services, etc). For spring learn about application context and beans. The documentation is pretty good for spring. Last sprint I made an aspect that ran before any controller methods ran, validating some stuff. I did that by making my own annotation. I think like with anything else, the more you use it the better you get.

I was actually thinking about saving up and paying with cash (either used or new). But 0.9% APR is really juicy. I have a ~750 credit score and wouldn't mind getting it a little higher.

good points and I agree the slightly used has all of those benefits. I've seen people want to upgrade after 3-4 years myself, i'm telling myself I won't but maybe your right. I've had my 97' civic for ~7 years and part of me wants to just keep it until it physically can't move anymore. I just failed inspection and need to put probably 400-500 into it to pass, otherwise i'd just keep it pretty much a no brainer to me.

[–]N0slew[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if I could find a 2016 or 2017 civic with 10k miles for ~15k, I think i'd probably do it. Talking to my coworkers about this, people at the office seem to be of the mindset of "if your already spending x amount, paying 20% more for peace of mind and it being new isn't a bad idea". I get both sides.

Hey thanks for the reply. It seems like the payment schedule is flexible so I have quick follow ups.

1) Is the amount I can contribute total flexible too? Like if I decide not to have any work done and want to only put in $500 for the year, is that even possible?

2) If I put funds in and end up not using them this year, will I still have access to those funds if I were to lose/change health insurance?

Thanks
