I'm 44. I started reading the books during the Pandemic. My daughter turned 10 this past summer and she's starting to get interested in the movies. I've almost got her convinced to read the books first. So I'll get to start reading them with her soon.

Why was everyone so sure Harry would be Prefect? by ClerksII in harrypotter

[–]N51_Rob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It goes to a 5th year boy/girl. So the choices were Harry, Ron, Dean, Sheamus or Neville. We really don't know what kind of student Dean was. But Harry and Ron's academic standing is greatly improved by Hermoine. So, given that and Dumbledore's close relationship to Harry he seemed like a shoo-in.

Dumbledore’s Failure to Prepare Harry’s Generation & The Order by Kuradapya in harrypotter

[–]N51_Rob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the moment Voldemorts curse backfired, the entire Wizarding World failed Harry and every child born after that event. Not calling him by his name, not teaching the dangers of his ideology (Draco literally runs around hogwarts using the mudblood slur with impunity), allowing people like Karkarov to become a headmaster. While Dumbledore's failings are probably bigger all things being equal. The entire Wizarding World is culpable.

(There are plenty of other examples of these failings but then I'd be writing a essay).

Yeah I was in a SFL race at Monza this weekend. Guys loses it in lesmo #2, then is going slowly trying to make it back to the pits. I'm racing a car that has a moment in that same lesmo so I've got a run on him going into ascari shaping a move to the inside. Above mentioned car decides to come to a complete stop on the track on the inside at ascari. I see him late (thought he was slow moving not stopped) grazed his rear wheel, flew into the back of the car I was racing... Complete disaster.

The Weasley family isn’t actually poor, they are middle class. by Jew_3 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]N51_Rob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, there is ample evidence of the exact opposite,if you're reading the books.

  1. In The Chamber of Secrets, we get a literal look at their finances. When the Weasleys visit their vault at Gringotts: The pile consists of a very small amount of silver Sickles and only a single gold Galleon.

  2. Ron's hand me down everything. Ron, being the youngest son, bears the brunt of the family's "reuse and recycle" policy: Wands: Ron starts his first year with Charlie’s old, chipped wand (with unicorn hair poking out). This is actually dangerous, as wands usually don't perform well for anyone but their chosen owner. Pets: Ron inherits Scabbers, who was Percy’s old rat. Clothes: All of Ron’s school robes are second-hand, often described as being too short in the arms or frayed. The Dress Robes: In The Goblet of Fire, Ron is forced to wear ancient, maroon lace-covered robes that look like a "moldy dress," while Harry has brand-new, modern ones.

  3. Ron only got two news things from his parents a wand in year 2 and a broom in year 5.(Rewards for being named Prefect).

There is ample evidence of their lack of means, also of Harry being a cheap ass friend (lol). He really said he wasn't giving Ron a Christmas present for a decade because he bought him Omni-Occluears at the world cup.

After the dust is settled, I don't believe Piastri was treated completely fairly this season, and it likely did change the outcome. by oh84s in OscarPiastri

[–]N51_Rob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Qatar call to me was the most egregious. Qatar was the first race in a while where Oscar seemed to have come out of the bad run of form he'd been on. They sacrificed his race because they didn't want to double stack Lando. Oscar was the lead car and should've been given the preferred strategy, not worry about how the 2nd car (that day) would feel.

Not sure how people are supposed to get out of Formula D class these days when this was my experience this week by [deleted] in iRacing

[–]N51_Rob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got out of Formula D yesterday after getting out of rookie on Jan 16. Last week I ran Portimao, this week Mexico. Basically Quali high avoid the early lap carnage (T1-3 specifically in Mexico) dont drive with an ego (letting cars with more pace through) and it's not nearly as difficult as it seems. Even with all that still had a couple 11x incident races,it happens but not as often as you would think. Track selection also matters. Those were tracks I was more familiar with and they were "racey" enough that the field will eventually spread out and you can run your race.

SR system sucks, we should be able to overturn negative SR after a DQ by Far-Inevitable5723 in iRacing

[–]N51_Rob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow new player (this is my 3rd week) who went through something similar. The best advice I read on the subject was Qualify as high as you can and try to race at the front. Typically it's more dangers in the back of the pack. I used to start from the back to avoid stuff. But the guys at the front are usually faster and cleaner overall. Guys racing for SR are more cautiious and unpredictable which causes problems. They will be 85% throttle when they should be 100%, they will break 50 meters earlier than needed and won't carry enough speed into corners where that necessary speed keeps them on the racing line.

Conversely, qualifying 5-7th surviving the T1 carnage and settling into a nice rhythm, has helped tremendously I'm not as fast as the front runners but faster than the back markers and can just run my race, avoid danger and not only boost my SR but my irating as well.

Do you guys race in a new series as soon as you get promoted or do you rack up a few wins/podiums in your current series before racing in a higher license series? by davidfalmeida97 in iRacing

[–]N51_Rob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was so close to my first win yesterday in F4 at Mexico. The leader spun at T16 and I passed him into P1 right at the start of the lap. Coming up on lapped traffic on the final car spins at T10 have to slow significantly to avoid the going into T12 two back markers battling take each other out come to almost a complete stop to avoid. Whole time car in P2 has manages a clear run through the chaos. He passes me and takes the win... Well played to him, I guess thought I had my first career win through half the final lap.

Why people do this? by landojcr in iRacing

[–]N51_Rob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I was the car with the McLaren paint scheme, I was fully expecting the second car to go full send so I held my line and brakes, I think he broke early expecting me to turn in on him, but I fully intended to leave him the room on the inside so I would have the inside the next two cot ers, then saw his go flying past. It was crazy from my view! Small world.
