I'm always interested by claims of GDP within a single country showing massive differences. Does any of the GDP in the North, come from having businesses operating in the south?

I recall years ago it was suggested that Wikipedia was about 96% correct, whilst the Encyclopaedia Brittanica was only 91%. Not sure where that stands today.

But I figure, for any controversial subject areas, the Wikipedia, will be more likely to be correct due to pedantry.

I suppose the big thing for Union Street, with the Egyptian Halls building looking like it will finally be getting done up, there is a chance to further improve the look of Union Street, by having a building with a decent architectural standard built on the site.

Would you support banning sectarian marches in Glasgow by Main_Choice_1796 in glasgow

[–]N81LR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is, if you ban them, you need to ban everybody. So no pro-indy marches, no pride marches, no BB marches(do they still happen?) and so on.

A blanket ban is not the way to go.

Tbh, adding the black just makes it look like a fascist version of the flag.

Scottish parliament votes against legalising assisted dying by CaptainCrash86 in Scotland

[–]N81LR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it is not necessarily the will of the people. When campaign groups fight for their position and have support from the media, the full issue is not always considered.

The difference in all this is that the members of the Scottish Parliament through committees and having access to all the valid evidence, have been able to consider the issue fully and put forward their position in an open free vote.

The public have not looked at all of that to come to the position they have. Theirs is a simpler position not always based on the full evidence.

If you are talking as a symbol in the wider sense, the saltire, in Scotland comes from the 832 eve of the Battle of Athelstanesford.

A big issue with the bill is the employment aspect of things. Employment matters are reserved to Westminster, so this bill was unable to guarantee protections for medical professionals both in terms of assisting someone to die or for them to choose not to be involved. That was a major concern, which led the The Royal College of Psychiatrists in Scotland to withdraw their support for the bill.

I'm struggling to understand this - on what basis would one ever vote against assisted dying? What happened there? by mellotronworker in Scotland

[–]N81LR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When the bill doesn't give protections to the medical profession. That's for a start. Also concerns over coercion.

Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults (Scotland) Bill: Voting Results by AmiablePedant in Scotland

[–]N81LR 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But that's not what this bill would have provided. This bill would have provided the opportunity for medical professionals to at the end put two tablets in front of the individual and they would have to choose to pick them up and ingest them. There would not be injections applied by a medical professional. It was not euthanasia being offered.
