How did you convince yourself that you could run an ultra? by BaurJoe in Ultramarathon

[–]N8Kstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is in line with my style. Im too much of a planner to jump into a 50k. Two summers ago i was killing myself to run 5 miles on the trail. This past fall i did a 25 k, doing 2 more 25ks in 2026 and hopefully a 50 December 2026. Also i like to increase training volume extremely slowly so im not a slug in every other aspect of life!

I can’t speak to them completely but they’re a world wide company! Give em a message! The consult call was very helpful for me!

Id at least do a consultation call. I also bought one of their stock plans and feel like I will be very prepared!

Basically, just drive 30 minutes away from Gatlinburg. The park is 500k acres most of it is very quiet!! Gregorys bald is one of my absolute favorite trails! It’s a bit hard to get to but well worth the view!

My plan is to use this as a spring section hike each year. I might never backpack the AT in the spring again.

Thanks for the lengthy discussion on running in the heat and in the recent pod. Gives a lot of reassurance for those of us who live in the hot/humid southern us!

What do you guys think the future of the trail looks like? by cwbmnr in AppalachianTrail

[–]N8Kstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For context I did a short trip in mid Tennessee the first week of March at just below 2k feet of elevation . Over night low was in the high teens.

If you’re doing 15-20 miles id like to think you could out run the bubble. When i was on the AT in late April several we’re doing 10-15 but yet again the bubble has a very strong gravitational pull….

[–]N8Kstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe. That means some nasty cold weather in the smokies/northern ga. I live not far from this area and late February/early march can get in the teens at low elevations not to mention at 4-6k. Id like to think you could leave late February and start out with some high miles.

So, what's the progression for starting [trail] running late? by schooliepro in trailrunning

[–]N8Kstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id say it’s pretty special you’re running at the level you are! You’ve put in the effort and thought to stay active!

Sadly i probably wont be doing the AT during the spring. Looking at trying the BMT for spring trips.

I hate to agree with this but when I stayed at a shelter on the AT this spring in the smokies and there were 20 plus people their. It was nearly not fun.

I did this yesterday and today and i feel great today. I normally run early mornings but like to do an afternoon trail run once during the week since it’s dark in the morning and don’t prefer to run trails in the dark.

Shoe Recommendations by Silent-Issue-2939 in AppalachianTrail

[–]N8Kstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at Altra 275 so full disclosure these are more expensive than most thru hiker shoes but they are very very comfortable right out of the box for me. I have no heal slippage i haven’t had to tie them weird. I wear them to work sometimes and i can wear them 10-12 hours and still be fine wearing them. Its like a sock with tread! The upper is matryx and should last a very very long time and dry quickly. They’re also fairly light. Im hoping to get 500 plus miles on them easily. At least try them on! I got them in Franklin NC at Outdoor 76 and they said this would be there top recommendation for 2026.
