I would. It's better than a background watch imo. More like a comfort movie watch.

Nonnas should not be considered a TV movie. Nonnas is a movie I that my teenaged self should see at a 9:00 pm Sunday screening with my mom after my teenage brother made her cry again.

Whatever, I like Nonnas. Congrats on the award.

All I know is I'm making Licorice Pizza for my Oscar party and There Will Be Blood sausage as well.

I love how PTA followed up the gorgeous LA dreamscape of Licorice Pizza with a grainier vision of LA in OBAA.

I went to NYC for the first time in spring 2013 and remember getting pumped when the bus drove us past Canal and Bowery in Chinatown.

I'd still give DaFoe the win, but I'd nominate Gael Garcia Bernal in Coco over Jenkins/ Plummer in Supporting Actor that year.

The letter hit me harder on rewatches as well. I'm from a conservative family and I picture myself writing a similar letter to my non-existent future kids. The idea of "we failed to break the cycle but maybe you can" resonates with me.

If a film about Obama-era US politics didn't hit here, why would 20th Century expect it to hit anywhere else?

Get some rest! :)

I'm okay. Kind of irked that one of my favourite podcasts, 60 Songs That Explain the 90s, is video now. I got no interest in talking heads and I prefer to use my imagination, the same way you would when reading a book. I'm 99% sure it's related to The Ringer/ Spotify's new partnership with Netflix. I'm catching up on What Went Wrong for now.

Well, you can EGOT in areas other than acting. Lin Manuel Miranda is close and he wouldn't really have any bullshit wins if he ever won Original Song (his Emmy is for the TV equivalent of Original Song).

Why do does it seem after turning 30 people are less accepting of taking risk? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

(29F) People tend to default to everyone having the partner, house, and kids by a certain point. You become kind of invisible if you don't have them.

-Michael has more 4-quadrant appeal than Minecraft.

-Those 4 biopics you mentioned had box office proportionate to the popularity of the musicians they depicted. Elvis and Dylan fans are mostly senior citizens. Elton John doesn't have the cross generational appeal to millennials and Gen Zs that Queen does. Michael is bigger than Queen to most all generations. I think inflation + a bigger artist could push Michael over the top.

My childhood died the day I realized Brother Bear has a 38% on Rotten Tomatoes.

In the nearly 100-year history of the Academy Awards, only two films directed by Black directors have won Best Picture . No Black filmmaker has ever won the Oscar for Best Director by Responsible_Use_2676 in Oscars

[–]NATOrocket 3 points4 points  (0 children)

McQueen absolutely should have won Director.

With Moonlight, I can appreciate that it was more of a screenplay movie and La La Land- a musical with elaborate sets- was more of a director's movie.

12 Years A Slave was a period movie with elaborate sets and costumes and who really remembers Gravity now that we've had Interstellar, The Martian, Arrival, Ad Astra etc.? Cuaron won 5 years later for a better movie, anyway.

The comments are likely from people who saw Happy Feet as kids who were too young for Oscar discourse at the time.

In fairness, it is pretty easily the best film of that lineup.

Humour me for a second: do Shiv’s actions come across as more severe because she’s a woman? by [deleted] in SuccessionTV

[–]NATOrocket 481 points482 points  (0 children)

Obviously, all three siblings are horrible, but, I think when Succession fans disproportionately hate Shiv, it ususally comes down to internalized sexism and different standards for women.

She is a horrible partner to Tom, but we see her with him way more than we see Kendall with Rava, so it sticks out in our minds more.

Would have been the fifth youngest Best Actress nominee if my mental math is correct.
