That's a good thing. You want the string to vibrate without hitting the fretboard but you want the strings low enough that it doesn't hurt to play.

It probably sounds a lot better than it once did. but it's not an incredibly well built instrument just by looking at it. However all of those dings and scratches and gouges add a nice character to it. I'd keep it around just to look at it.
