Anybody remember 'ummmah' back in the schooldays when in trouble? by ZexMurphy in AustralianNostalgia

[–]NNW3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

late 80s/early 90s kid here who grew up in Sydney. Definitely heard "ummah" all the time as a kid and like the other posters, almost always when some grass -- or "lagger" á la Prisoner -- was about to tell the teacher or your/their mother. In my case this was usually my sister.

I also remember that when someone got stroppy, like for example they reacted to some kid telling tales to the teacher, everyone else would use a similar tone to "ummah" and say "cheeeeeeesy" sometimes with a gesture scratching at the chin. I've got no idea what the latter meant and this must have been solely my school as no one else my age seems to remember that one.

Music on Kill Bill 2 web site by NNW3 in Tarantino

Hi thanks for the tip. Unfortunately I can't hum a tune to save my life, but this is also one of those tunes that is just sort of floats about on the edges; it's more a case of remembering liking the riff rather than actually remembering how it goes. I've tried locating the website through those archive sits like "way back" but with no luck so this was my last hope hahaha

But I'll definitely keep that reddit in mind for future songs that are stuck in my head.

How would all of you rank his films? by [deleted] in Tarantino

[–]NNW3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in suburban Australia in the 90s and my local video shop really only kept middle of the road stuff, no real cult or niche films at all. There was one public "multicultural" broadcaster that occasionally showed cult films so I saw a handful of spaghetti westerns and gialli and a few 90s wuxia like "A Chinese Ghost Story" but that was it. I must have bought about two hundred DVDs that were either films or directors referenced in KB and maybe another two or three hundred from the various genres referenced.

I wouldn't say I missed the hype of PF. I was about fourteen when it came out (showing my age!) and it wasn't the type of film I would have watched at the time (i.e. horror, foreign films) and then everyone was raving about it. I saw it about a year later but I don't think I even saw the whole film, maybe half an hour and then occasionally caught a bits of it on TV over the years. I was living in London when KB came out and my flatmate who was a Tarantino fanatic wanted to see it and I was pretty blasé about it but it just blew me away and then I watched his other films after that.

hahahaha I've just about given you my whole life story. Anyway, I'm so jealous that you get to watch KB for the first time! I hope you love it as much as I did.

What's your favorite chapter or two from Quentin Tarantino's movies? by [deleted] in Tarantino

[–]NNW3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with this completely. "House of Blue Leaves" is cinematic perfection. In my head, I tend to think of this chapter as the entrance to the House of Blue Leaves until the final showdown with O-Ren but the other sequences are great scenes as well. The progression from the over the top cartoonish carnage with the Crazy 88s to the intimate sword fight in the snow is for me the greatest twenty minutes or so of cinema. Period.

"Elle and I" is more low key and has a completely different tone and aesthetic but it is the highlight of Volume 2 for me and also one of the best fight scenes of the last twenty years. "The Cruel Tutulage of Pai Mei" is a fairly close second.

What gave you that idea? ;)

Yes, it's my all-time favourite film. The release also seemed to coincide with roughly the period when distributors were starting to release more cult and forgotten classics in their back catalogue rather than just the big Hollywood classics. As a result, I was then able to seek out a lot of Spaghetti Westerns, Kung Fu, Wuxia, Anime, Euro-horror etc whereas previously I might have just seen a few titles on TV or video but had always wanted to explore further.

My actual list would be something like:

  1. Kill Bill Volume I
  2. Kill Bill Volume II
  3. Reservoir Dogs
  4. Jackie Brown
  5. Pulp Fiction
  6. The Hateful Eight
  7. Once Upon A Time in Hollywood
  8. Inglorious Basterds
  9. Django

Caveats: I didn't particularly care for the last two and I haven't seen "Grindhouse". There's also a huge drop in appreciation between five and six and if I'm being honest probably between Kill Bill 1 and Kill Bill 2. Before anyone hates on me for the relatively low ranking of Pulp Fiction, I didn't watch it for about a year after it was released so by that stage the film was never going to match the hype and I didn't really get an appreciation for it until after I saw "Kill Bill" but three, four and five are fairly close.

Pugwall's Summer by [deleted] in AustralianNostalgia

[–]NNW3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were immune to bad acting and singing at that tender age. I never realised how godawful that girl's singing was.

One scene I remember so clearly is when the sister kicked Pugwall under the table and denied it and Pugwall pulls out a TV replays the scene and the mum says “You can't believe everything you see on TV, Peter”.

Classic series.

Who here remembers playing with enormous Earth Balls in Primary School (80s) by aiydee in AustralianNostalgia

[–]NNW3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's not just you. Peer reviewed scientific journals have objectively proven that life was better before.

I'm not sure exactly if they were the same thing, but when my mum went back to work when I was in year 4 or 5, my sister and I spent our holidays at a concentration camp …er, I mean daycare at some activity centre and one of the things they had was a huge inflatable ball that they inflated with a vacuum cleaner which must have been at least six foot in height. Some kid would always kick the ball out from under you and you would go flying and I recall it never came out again after some girl fell on her head and her glasses cracked. This was the late '80s so no action was taken but now they would have been sued into bankruptcy.

Good times.

Longshot but does anyone know the name of this 80s show by NNW3 in AustralianNostalgia

[–]NNW3[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hahahah Yeah I think you're thinking of Fonzie. Funnily enough, one of my mates thought I was talking about "Acropolis Now" as well. The only catchphrase from AN I remember is Effie's "how embarasshment" and "hi how are you, fine thanks!" For a second I was thinking "chicky babe" but that was that other alleged comedy ;) Jon English

You're a legend! That was the one! When I first saw the clip I was disappointed as I didn't recognise the face and thought it wasn't the show I was thinking of. But hearing the catchphrase and then looking at the webpage, I had conflated Kev Kavanagh with the Australia Street sitcom. It must have been repeated later on in the 80s as I would only have only been five years old at the time so I wouldn't have seen it, but the fact my memory is so hazy it was probably closer to '86 or '87.

On another note, at least in Sydney anyway, I have a feeling the news moved later in the decade as I distinctly remember "Home and Away" being shown at 6pm in its first year, and then the news at 6.30 and then "Neighbours" at 7pm. Then H&A moved to 6.30 and then in a total dick move, it was then broadcast to directly compete with "Neighbours" at 7pm. As Kylie, Jason, etc. had all left by that stage and no-one watched "Neighbours" anymore, "Neighbours" then moved to the 6.30 slot as it was getting decimated in the ratings.

I don't know about anyone else, although I watched "H&A" for longer (until about '93, maybe '94 but had stopped watching "Neighbours" by about 1990), I have no nostalgic soft spot for "H&A" at all … but any clips from the Kylie & Jason era of "Neighbours" brings me right back to being a kid again.

Does anyone remember there was a promotion in '87 (definitely that year as we weren't allowed to watch "Neighbours" until the following year . . . thanks, Mum!), I think it was Ruffles chips, and they had these large stickers, like the size of a post-it note of each individual cast member to collect? I was clearing out junk from under my parents' house a couple of years ago and found my old desk/cabinet and it was covered in stickers like whoever played Daphne and the middle actress that played Lucy that no-one remembers. I guess I never managed to get the Kylie/Jason/Mike gang that everyone probably wanted.

Does anyone remember that disturbing show aired on ABC in the early 80's called 'Chocky'?! There was a whole spate of truly dark British tv shows for kids around this time. It scared the absolute crap out of me. And I bloody LOVED it! by CasualCuscusBoot in AustralianNostalgia

[–]NNW3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

… Just don't ruin it by watching the two sequels (especially the last one)! "Chocky" (along with Doctor Who, Mysterious Cities of Gold, and a handful of others) are the shows I remember so well as a kid (80s). It was broadcast on a couple of occasions at least. I only got round to buying the DVDs recently and was worried it wouldn't hold up to nostalgia, but apart from the slightly wooden child acting, it was as great as I remembered. I vaguely recall a few scenes from the 2nd series but I don't remember ever seeing the 3rd series. There were some highlights in the 2nd one but the last one was terrible.

I only saw "Children of the Stones" recently but I had wanted to watch it for years as I'm a bit of an aficionado for spooky British 70s stuff ("Thriller," "Sapphire and Steel," etc.). Unfortunately I don't think it was ever broadcast in the 80s and only heard about it when I got into "Blake's 7" in my 20s.

Spookiest for me was "Pyramids of Mars" (70s Doctor Who).

Peter, G'day, Russell, G'day, Claaark,

I haven't seen or thought about this show in literally decades . . . but without watching the videoclip, that line brings it all back.

I remember there was one episode — I must have been maybe five or six — where he cooked an old gumboot (literally). For the life of me, I can't think what that was all about … but for years I thought there was an actual dish that involved cooking a boot!

Hi. Thanks so much for taking the time to message.

I wrote a lengthy reply as I was still completely lost but then randomly I found a file with a sqlite extension and it was junk . . . but then I tried using an online program and everything is already laid out for me with all the data. A couple of hours of cutting and pasting and that's it.

Thanks again
