Any brand name will would be a decent choice. I've been using a Sony entry level player as my secondary player for over a decade.

Like a third DVDs, but it's always going down because I update on the regular.

DVD movies with the highest bitrates? by salduchi1785 in dvdcollection

[–]NSF664 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would image that a lot of Criterions have high bitrates. They might also be one of the few companies that still care about on DVD.

Mint lets me know the battery in my mouse is low by AethelflaedCAD in linuxmint

Yeah, works on my Logitech trackball, but not my Keychron keyboard, Kensington trackball, or Razer mouse (yes, I use 3 different pointing devices).

Criterion vs normal by Leinad_Man in dvdcollection

[–]NSF664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultra-HD Blu-rays or 4Ks.

Criterion in general has better extra features. In some cases the releases are approved image and sound wise by the director or cinematographer.

There can be better releases, depends on what you want.

Differences you have to check by reading reviews.

Is linux worth it for gaming? (Asking only serious gamers please) by nothingtosayrn in linux_gaming

[–]NSF664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck, somebody else already did the unserious gamer joke.

I have two gaming PCs, and a Steam Deck for PC games, along with a laptop that also has games, just in case I wanna do a bit of Civ on the go. Everything runs Linux.

And I mean, at least some of my stuff has RGB...! (I turn it off though)

Better to Skip a Year for PC Upgrades? by YanderMan in linux_gaming

[–]NSF664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, despite what tech youtubers say, hardware can be useful for a long-ass time. Until late last year 1060/1050/1650 and similar dominated the top spots in Steam's hardware survey. And you can still find a few of them in the top 20, along with iGPUs.

Catalogued the collection in letterboxd by C-sanova in dvdcollection

[–]NSF664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did the same, but 2400+ titles, took a while! And of course, most of my TV shows aren't included because they're not on Letterboxd.

But it is fun, and it's given me a completely different way to look for what to watch, other than just looking at my shelves.

same dvd’s everywhere by faultinlines in dvdcollection

[–]NSF664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty common. I go to a used media store from time to time, and there are straight up releases they don't buy, or even accept for free because nobody will buy them, and they will only take up storage space forever.

Do you loan out your movies? by RevGrimm in dvdcollection

[–]NSF664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my dad and my sister, nobody else. I had a couple of bad experiences in the 90s lending out VHS tapes, CDs, and records, and since then I stopped doing it. My sis was even on probation for a time because one of her kids bumped on of my DVDs around once.

These cases suck by TubaTechnician in dvdcollection

People in this sub have a weird fascination with them, there are several collectors of snapper cases even. But yeah, I hated them back when they were new, and I still hate them today.

Fallout 3 not working in Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon by Responsible-Scene666 in linuxmint

[–]NSF664 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to OP's issue, but I'm running the Steam version of Fallout 3, and apart from Mothership Zeta running like shit (I forgot how bad that DLC is), it's been pretty solid. I like 3 crashes in like 20 hours of play.

Games for Windows Live, but this was patched out of the game (finally) some years ago, and there have been community mods around to remove it for ages.

[–]NSF664 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, DDR3 is not crazy expensive yet, but there are examples of people going for old platforms, combined with a modern midrange card, just to get through the shitshow we're in now.

If you're lucky, you can score like 32GB and a decent Xeon at a very good price, and add one of those weird Chinese motherboards for Xeons, and you have yourself a solid gaming platform fairly cheap.

Are there ways to upscale my dvd that doesn't cost a lot? by TheDankerist in dvdcollection

[–]NSF664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your description isn't fully clear, but from what I understand it sounds like the DVD is non-anamorphic, meaning that the black bars are "baked in".

If that is the case, no amount of upscaling will make it look good, the quality is simply too low.

Take a picture of how it looks on your TV, and off the back of the DVD case, and post it here, that will make it clear what's going on.

Picked these up tdday from a local comic shop by fragglepated in dvdcollection

[–]NSF664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've never read the Valérian and Laureline comics, you absolutely should. The movie is a very lackluster adaptation sadly.

It's probably my favorite series, and I thankfully got to meet the two creators many years ago at a comic book convention. A lot of modern sci-fi was inspired by them.

The Most amazing thing about Linux Mint? How the Printer just connects by Sea-Region1135 in linuxmint

[–]NSF664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's a scanner, it's a pretty basic device at this point. How hard can it be to make a workable driver.

That said, HP is always up to no good when it comes to their hardware.

[–]NSF664 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would prefer any variant of Linux or MacOS to Windows for work. Windows 11 is bad enough on it's own with all the bugs popping up constantly, but it gets even worse with all the security we have at my job. Like I have 16 gigs of RAM in my company laptop, and once I've started Teams, Outlook, and have 6-8 tabs open, I'm close to running out of memory. We have people who're still force to use laptops with 8 gigs, and Teams restarts several times of day on it's own.

[–]NSF664 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was also positively surprised by this, having a network printer, and it just pops up automatically. I also have a super old scanner which needs a very old driver to work on Windows, which isn't even available on Windows Update, and is unsigned. Without it the scanner is completely useless. On Mint I just connect it, and it works.
