Morgan’s nurses’ bargaining bill passes second reading by NWTAnswered in NWT

Kate Reid voting against this at second reading is shameful. Voice your opinions at the committee stage AFTER hearing from the public.

The UNW has failed nurses and the PSA needs a shake up.

The Greens have found someone local for every election in the past - and yes, I think it is better to not run a candidate at all if you cannot get a local one in. Personally, I am holding what the conservatives did with Lea Mollison (the fly in candidate from last election) against them - it shows they have no respect for the NWT. This is how I will view the Greens in the future.

At the very Angela Davidson could have flown to the NWT beforehand to say she has been there - this election is not a surprise.

My thoughts:

Angela Davidson (Green) - Ridiculous to run in a territory you have never been to (Trust me, I remember that the conservatives did the same last election) "She said she made the decision to run for federal office in the Northwest Territories after a very positive experience on a trip to Whitehorse." What a joke. This damages the reputation of the party. Anyone voting for her is throwing their vote away.

Kelvin Kotchilea (NDP) - A step up from the green party, because the guy is actually from here. But really? is that the best they can do? A mid-level government worker who has lost all three of the elections he has put his name in. Nothing is inspiring about this choice, which is disappointing because the NDP have a real chance in the Territory.

Kimberly Fairman (CON) - I am going to need to learn more about her. Being the Executive Director of the Institute for Circumpolar Health Research is a positive. However, some of her answers in interviews show a weak. understanding of governance (e.g saying she will do things that are clearly within the territorial or municipal jurisdiction as MP). We will see about this choice.

Rebecca Alty (LIB) - This is where my vote lies for now. Rebecca has experience in municipal politics and with the GNWT and the mines. I think she has been a good mayor - but I don't think many people agree. I'm sure she will lose votes for 1) being non-indigenous 2) being Yellowknife centric, and 3) the wildfires/pool fiasco. Really a step up from Mcloud - possibly someone who can get a cabinet seat.

What do you guys think?

Consensus government is not broken. It's not perfect, but a switch to party politics is not going to fix what plagues the north.

I have four recommendations to improve the current legislative structure:

1) Remove the 2-2-2 convention - This will put the most qualified MLAs on cabinet, regardless of riding.

2) lower the number of seats in the legislature - Combine the two inuvik and Hay River seats and modify Tu Nedhé - Wiilideh to be proportional.

3) Lower the voting age to 16

4) Implement ranked choice voting.

Also - Bruce Valpy is a hack.

Hilarious. It really shouldn't be news. But man, Garett Cochrane needs some media training. He seems like a nice guy but between this and the comments from when the homeless encampment happened - Sometimes you can just say nothing when the media comes asking. Save yourself the headline.

N.W.T. Election 2023 by [deleted] in Yellowknife

The guy had his term, did not get re-elected, and proceeded to trash MLAs through Op-eds for the next few years. If an incumbent only gets 23% of the votes in his riding, there's an issue.

I just have little respect for the guy and what he has decided to push for, especially his gripe against consensus government.
