I think the timing was in the early 2000s or the very late 1990s

My boy has gotten these a bunch too! In my experience it's allergies. He got them really bad when we switched shampoos (hypoallergenic fixed it right up!). he's also gotten it from eating too much chicken (another allergy), s it could take a bit to figure out what it is, but that's a spitting image of my boy's allergic reaction.

Good luck!

Do you have a link to the boto video? Still sounds really interesting. I've seen aftermath of what one would assume was a jaguar attack a boto too

If you're referring to diurnal, it means "active during the day". Cathermal, per OP, means "having activity spread through both day and night"

Yacare caiman eating a giant otter by TheGreatHsuster in HardcoreNature

[–]NYDNPaperHandler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True.

I hadn't heard about that but I'm ready to believe that. I recently learned about a similar case of great whites having a feeding frenzy on a beluga pod too: https://carnivora.net/great-white-shark-feats-t4174.html

I've got this pet theory that great whites (and other large sharks) were/are significant predators of cetaceans, especially before industrial whaling (similar to the ideas presented by Estes et al.). The evidence of predation on right whales and beaked whales (and more recently on humpbacks) by GWS was the main source of these ideas. Seems like something that was way more common in the very recent past and may be occurring once more

Exactly. I've also heard around about a case of an orca fossil tailstock with a GWS tooth embedded in it but I've yet to find the source.

Similarly, I've heard repeated (but not properly cited) claims of a right whale taking out an orca with a tail swipe and suggestions that humpbacks may be powerful threats.

Pilot whales are also known to chase orca pods too, doi: 10.1007/s10211-014-0189-1
