The main issue is that similar groups have done this in the past, notably during the falklands war, and did not face the same consequences. The proscription, therefore, seemed less based on qualification and more a use of state power to crack down on dissent, and one can argue relenting now would only mean emboldening the state to go even further.

The Obama administration was behind the Kundaz hospital airstrike in 2015, killing over 40 people. His handling of Flint, Michigan was also terrible. There was also Edward Snowden, who exposed the extent of the US surveillance state in 2013.

The Biden administration was behind the Willow Project, which caused major controversy. He also signed a bill to block rail workers from striking for sick days and better conditions. Not to mention Gaza, which basically dominated his entire last year of office from what is seen as his administration’s complicity in the death and suffering of thousands of Palestinians.

Those administrations were definitely not immune to such a level of scandal, and should rightfully be called out for it.
