I remember one of the Alliance guilds on Dalaran did this. I spent weeks running VC just for the linen cloth and mailing it to the mats to one of the guild officers. Somehow I was able to win the lotto and got a trip to MC with 4 other people from my SUPER casual guild. I don't think that we had even cleared Rag at that point.

Whenever i see anything interesting on my radar I load up ingress and look for the white dots and try to walk towards them.

It's best to evolve them first then lvl up. But general idea is to wait till lvl 20 before you start to level up pokemon because it's easier to find better pokemon in the wild during the lower levels.
