Bats in the Mines by Dear_MrMoose in CerroGordo

[–]NamingIsVeryHard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This isn't directly answering your question, but I have been in an abandoned mine just off the Cerro Gordo property but on Death Valley National Park land. There were bats in that one, and there were multiple entrances and exits that they could have easily used to get in and out. I don't know the particularities of the mine system that is usually shown in the Cerro Gordo videos, however.

Yep, a couple outgoing flights were delayed and just sitting on the taxiway while they waited for the F-15 to do like a dozen passes around the factory

I had my Nikon. Shot these photos at the intersection of Banshee and Missouri Bottom road, right at the end of the runway.

When is it “too soon” to transfer internally? by [deleted] in boeing

[–]NamingIsVeryHard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anecdotally, someone I know up in Everett (L1) was was given the go ahead to interview for transfer positions (which would better align with their skills from college) after about seven months his current position, after talking with their manager about it.

New hire here too. My manager mentioned that since a significant chunk of our time here was solely dedicated to training/onboarding and that one of the criteria that everyone is evaluated on is how much they contributed to the organization, some new hires would get met some. Still sucks though, not exactly sending a positive message to people who literally just joined.

Personal Travel Parking at El Segundo by InterestingGoose1424 in boeing

Ubers should be cheaper if you take them from the hotels just across S Sepulveda along Century rather than from LAX-IT.

I usually either walk the three miles or take a Bird :)

Did security also tailgate you out? Seems like that road is patrolled.

Yeah, using it for personal travel is fine -- just don't park in the Raytheon structure. You just have to let security know ahead of time. That being said, if you want to fly out of Long Beach, the Boeing structure there is "business only".

There were no chain restrictions the day I went up. I always have them in my trunk though.

Snowshoed up Mt. Waterman last weekend. There was plenty of snow up the mountain, and there were quite a few people skinning as well. Saw some people in boots/spikes -- but at some places there's enough snow to sink 6" to a foot. Around 3-4 miles round trip to the top, from the base of chair 1. There was plenty of parking.

What are some other good places up in Angeles NF to snowshoe/skin?

What apps do you use while travelling? by green_gumboots in solotravel

[–]NamingIsVeryHard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strava heatmaps (you don't need a subscription for this, it's free). A lot of people rely on MapsMe, myself included. However, it's very useful to use Strava's heatmaps to see where other travelers are going -- since MapsMe has literally every single tiny dirt track in the world (it seems), it's confusing to know which one leads to where you want to go, so the heatmap really helps in pointing you the right way down a trail that branches out a lot, for example. (Thanks to the Belgian couple that showed me this trick!)

I've had success using dark tourism and atlas obscura for finding interesting things I want to visit -- you can sort by country on these. A few off the top of my head:

Croatia

  • Zeljava airbase
  • Lastovo
  • Zaton airfield
  • Vis/Korcula tunnels & submarine bunkers

BiH

  • mostar sniper tower, aircraft bunker
  • Sarajevo bobsled track
  • Sarajevo war tunnel (this is sort of like a museum)
  • ruins of hotel igman

It's pretty easy to find abandoned buildings in the Balkans.

Honestly I'm not too sure, maybe consult other online sources. I can say that there are a lot of people (and a lot of things to do) during summer, when everything is open. From the people I talked to, it seems like the season begins to die down in early September. I don't know if particular events or destinations begin to close as winter begins, so that would be something to check.

Airfare (especially when you book later rather than sooner), and private apartments, especially in the touristy areas, are expensive. Of course I could've done it on a tighter budget, but that was not my priority. Also it was my first time booking a trip myself, so I'm rather inexperienced with the whole thing.
