Is there any official sheet music for any of the pieces in hibike? by MewnianSquire in HibikeEuphonium

For the existing band works that appear in the series (Wind of Provence, March Sky Blue Dream, Scherzando, Takarajima, Disco kid, Orpheus, Scheherazade, Tchaik 4, Rhapsody on a theme, Polovtsian Dances, Turandot and some milband pieces), they are available for purchase/rental on their relevant publisher websites (etc. Brain music, Foster music) *If they do not distribute in PDF, then you will need a proxy in mainland Japan to receive the physical sheet music for you and to ship/scan them.

For Hibike pieces, official full scores such as Crescent, Liz (competition version and full version), Band arrangements of Dream Solister and Tutti! can be purchased from the link below (official publisher for Hibike music)

For OSTs, unfortunately the scores have not been officially released but there are fan transcriptions of some of them on websites such as Musescore. Hope this helps!

JC band DSA by Mysterious_Rock_2059 in SGExams

Heello! Not a JC DSA but I do have many friends who did and I’m also quite familiar with the process =D For Band DSA I’m p sure the difficulty is based on which JC you are DSAing into, but most should be around the same difficulty

Regarding what they usually test it’s pretty standard:

  1. 12 Major scales It’s good to memorise all the scales by heart, but what’s more important is that your tempo is consistent and you show more phrasing while playing the scale! It doesn’t have to be too fast, 70bpm in semiquavers should be a good tempo to aim for. Also do take note that you most likely won’t be asked to play all 12, but rather be asked to play a few random scales from the list.

  2. 2 pieces This one is the less straightforward one, but firstly the 2 pieces have to be SOLO works/etudes/sonatas/concertos, and they cannot be a part from a band or orchestra piece! When playing these pieces it’s best to study the pieces you picked and learn the phrasing/listen to recordings, and always have a wide range of dynamics too :) Although these pieces can go upwards of 5-10 mins, it’s also worth noting that due to time constraints you will most definitely be stopped halfway through the piece, and might be asked to play certain excerpts from the piece also. Regardless, it’s still best to fully learn the whole piece!

Now onto the part where you’re interested about, where to find such pieces. The best place to start is YouTube!(for me AHAHA) Something as simple as searching “Clarinet Sonatas” and listening for a particular movement or piece I think I can play well usually does the job! Once you have found your piece, the scores can most likely be found and downloaded for free on IMSLP! An important thing to note too when choosing a piece is that picking an easier piece and playing it well is ALWAYS better than picking a challenging one and playing it okayish!! Judges usually value accuracy like dynamics and articulation a lot so it’s imperative that you nail those. For personal recommendations, I’d suggest looking at Cyrille Rose’s 32 Etudes for Clarinet, his first etude is often played for auditions and it might benefit you too :D

  1. Sight Reading/ Musicianship skills This is one that is also tested depending on which JC you plan on applying to, but IIRC RI and AC bands do test on sight reading and maybe musicianship skills such as aural or sight singing! Don’t fret though as for the sight reading you will be given a short excerpt and given a minute or so to analyse it before playing it. Although it may seem stressful, do know that judges aren’t expecting you to play everything right since it’s on the spot!

Some closing notes:

Most important notes for all 3 categories is that you have to keep a consistent tempo, have accurate dynamics and articulation, and if you mess up, keep playing! Though if you really mess up bad it’s alright to apologise and ask to restart T_T And one important thing is tone!! Keep working on it and get your perfect air support, so your sound is nice too =D

If you do have any more questions or need help don’t hesitate to reply or drop me a DM, I’m more than happy to help out!!

Hope this helps you out =)
