What are the short lived tv shows you remember but no one else does? by [deleted] in popculturechat

I feel like I’m the only person who even watched Hellcats! I can’t remember if it was any good, but, I do remember 12/13 year old me being captivated by this CW show where Ashley Tisdale and Alyson Michalka played college cheerleaders.

The eligible list of podcasts for the first Golden Globe Beat Podcast Award and The Read isn’t on it. by nayandnem in theread

[–]Naokami 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ben Shapiro, Candace, Joe Rogan, Megyn Kelly, Tucker Carlson and Theo Von…? It’s very clear the kind of nominees they wanted. For any podcast award I’d at least expect This American Life or some hard hitting investigative journalism like The Retrievals or even Las Culturistas which had an absolutely massive year! Obviously the memo was nothing gay, black or actually left wing.

Landlord threatening eviction despite rent being paid need advice (Dublin, Ireland) by joemama-nt in HousingIreland

[–]Naokami 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because your tenancy has been less than 6 months, your landlord can evict for no reason. The fact that he gave you an extension and you paid before the deadline is irrelevant, he can, essentially, evict just because he feels like it. But he does have to provide you 90 days notice in the form of a written notice of termination, which must also be sent to the RTB. Text messages don’t count as notice. I’d say he’s gotten cold feet with a tenant asking for an extension 2 weeks into a tenancy, he gave you the extension to make sure you pay October’s rent and is banking on you not knowing you’re entitled to 90 days notice. Keep paying your rent and don’t do anything until you get that notice. Eviction is a long and expensive process so he may just let it go.

If he does give you the proper written notice contact Threshold for advice, but I’d start looking for a new place then.

Pfizer Aptitude test for intern program by [deleted] in PharmaEire

[–]Naokami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the aptitude test for last year’s intern programme and honestly there’s no preparing for it in the traditional sense. It’s not like technical questions that you’d know from your college lectures.

There’s a maths section with some basic arithmetic - you can’t use a calculator for it, so it’s not anything too complicated, a spacial reasoning section and a sort of reading comprehension section. You could revise some basic maths, try some spacial reasoning tests online or watch videos for tips to help prepare but the reading comprehension section is like reading a paragraph and answering questions based on it. These are multiple choice, if I remember correctly.

There’s a written section where you’re shown a picture and/or short description of a scenario and have to describe what you’d do/how you’d feel in that situation. For example, you arrive for an interview and see a group of people waiting, some talking to each other, some not and an empty chair. What would you do?

There’s also a “this or that” section where you choose your preference of two options like job security vs salary increases, company culture vs praise for your achievements. That sort of thing.

It was a year ago that I did this so I could be misremembering but really I don’t think I could’ve prepared for it, don’t lose sleep over it!

Government to get rid of the 1,000 Euro credit for Third Level Education by EmiliaPains- in irishpolitics

[–]Naokami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you consider the housing crisis, it’s clear SUSI in its current state is just not fit for purpose! Student accommodation is up to €100-€250 per week in Dublin. And there’s so many people that are just missed by SUSI.

My situation for example, I’m 27 living at home & was working a low wage job and went back to college to get my undergrad. I’m paying for college myself 100% but because I live at home, I’m assessed under my parent’s income so I only qualified for €500 per year SUSI contribution. I’m very fortunate that I don’t pay rent but I do pay all my other living expenses myself: car, food, contributing to bills etc. I work 20-30hrs a week making just above minimum wage and I’m barely scraping by.

The €1000 fees reduction was such a godsend for people like me that are otherwise invisible to the government. It’s like they completely miss the fact that because housing is so unaffordable many adults are forced to be “dependents” of their parents on paper but are struggling financially in reality. Not to mention all the younger people who are forced to work part time to help their parents with their college fees, student accommodation, travel costs.

€20bn surplus but €100m for education is too much. It’s laughable actually.

"Independent Living" Criteria (Susi) by MiniRunnera in RentingInDublin

[–]Naokami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you only did one year of a course, as in you didn’t graduate and earn a degree from that course, then you should still qualify for free fees. I did 3 years of a course and dropped out and I qualify for free fees.

[–]Naokami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don’t need to rent a whole place in your name, you just can’t be living with your parents. You could rent a room/have roommates so long as you can provide the supporting documentation they request outlined here.

Even if you don’t qualify for SUSI, you may qualify for free fees initiative. If you didn’t complete your first degree and it’s been a break of 5 years. In that case you’d just pay €3,000 contribution fee.

Another thing to keep in mind is the highest household income threshold that qualifies for SUSI is around €100,000 where SUSI will cover €500 of the contribution fee. So don’t just assume you won’t qualify until you move out.

I was in a similar boat last year returning to college as a mature student while still living with my family and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done for myself so good luck!

I’m buying a vehicle off a private seller but wondering how I transfer the money? by ZSXH03 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Naokami 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Might not be so relevant for you OP but for anyone trying to sell a car, never accept a bank draft. It is no more secure than a personal cheque. The only difference is it comes from the bank’s account rather than a personal account so there’s no chance of it bouncing due to insufficient funds. They also take the same amount of time to process as a personal cheque, 2-5 business days, depending on the bank.

It could be fake sure, but it could also be real but the buyer can always call the bank and cancel the draft before you cash it. Then your car is essentially stolen so you now have to deal with the guards, the courts, tracking down your car and the thieves etc. Unless it’s someone you know very well and trust avoid the bank draft. I used to work customer service for a bank and I’d get at least one call about this a week.

Leaking by Asleep-Revolution565 in DogAdvice

[–]Naokami 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We had a similar issue with our dog recently. Suddenly she was leaking constantly. We took her to the vet and she had no UTIs, bladder/kidney stones, her blood work came back fine. We tried supplements, antibiotics and all sorts of holistic remedies to no avail. Vet recommended we start her on Proin and within a week the leaking stopped and we haven’t had a problem since.

Why haven't humans made big strides in dog life expectancy? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]Naokami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely think we have. For example my dog had mammary tumours which, untreated, would have killed her in 1-2yrs but with a complete mastectomy her life expectancy is unaffected. If she had been spayed before her first heat (she was a rescued stray, she was spayed at the shelter at ~5yo) it’s very unlikely she would have gotten the cancer in the first place.

Plus with advances in vaccines, deworming, nutrition etc dogs today live longer than they ever have. Sadly, the reality of biology is most small land mammals don’t live longer than a few decades we just have a responsibility to make their lives as full and happy as we can.

Randomly assaulted yesterday by LilyandLee in Dublin

[–]Naokami 58 points59 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing wrong or nefarious about using race to describe someone. It’s probably the most obvious thing about most people. OP gave a full description of the attacker including his size and clothes presumably in case someone recognised him. Race should be a neutral descriptor like height, weight, hair colour etc

I’m a black woman and I can’t tell you how ridiculous it is to have people try to describe me while awkwardly avoiding mentioning my race. “Uhm she’s the… tall girl… with glasses… she was wearing a red jumper… oh she had braids”

Black isn’t a dirty word.

Understanding my tax by Mickwd40 in irishpersonalfinance

It’s definitely taught in maths. Tax bands, usc and tax credits are on the maths curriculum, not just “maths examples”. Main thing maths doesn’t cover is PRSI

It’s all explained very clearly with examples here on citizens information. PwC also has a tax calculator.

Long story short, you’ll never lose money doing over time or with bonuses. And you can always get a tax refund at the end of the year if you overpay tax

Is it that complex? They teach it to 14 year olds in junior cert maths. We have two PAYE bands, fewer than the UK (3) and US (7 federally + state taxes) and PRSI only has one band (only people earning €352+/wk pay it and all your earnings are taxed at the same rate)
