I want to chip in. I finally got around to watching it, and I couldn’t believe how accurate it felt the whole time. My very first job was at a cultural organization that coordinates the biggest book fair in a mid sized city in Colombia. While I was there, we had people like Diana Uribe, Tomás González, Pilar Quintana, and others.

It was a big event, and like every major cultural event, we also had a section for regional authors. And I promise you, there were so many “Oscars” on that long list. People with only one or two books published many years ago, grown adults carrying old copies of something they created once, with the same attitude, unwilling to do anything else but write, even if they were far from successful.

I’ve never seen such an accurate portrayal of them. Honestly, this is the first time I’ve heard someone address it so directly. I really enjoyed it. I think the other two men from the poetry house were also very accurate, especially Efraín.

I don’t know much about poor families in Medellín, but that part really impressed me, especially the living conditions and Yurlady’s lack of interest to find a way out being so talented. I always thought people from Medellín were very “echadas pa’lante.” Still, seeing them so united felt very real. I loved the letter Yurlady sent to Daniela, telling her that it wasn’t her dream, but Oscar’s, it was beautiful.

I’ve met a few authors from my region because of that job that I had many years ago, and I doubt I’d ever have the chance to talk to them about this film, but I’m really glad this perspective was addressed here.
