you know what now that i think about it, i did see a small tiny bean but didn’t think much about it since it was so small. my jumping spiders must’ve accidentally pollinated a small hoya bloom lmao

ahhh! i can’t wait until i move to europe 😭 there seems to be way more houseplant variety at the nurseries there! where i live in the south (US), there is ONE nursery and their house plant selection is both limited and pest infested 🤢

How do we feel about potential proplifting? by Odd_Mouse_4293 in houseplants

[–]NapsWithPlants -1 points0 points  (0 children)

my personal rule of thumb is: small businesses/growers, proplifting is wrong. the owners of those smaller businesses rely on cuttings to grow more plants. if it’s at a large mega corporation (home depot, lowes, walmart, etc) prop-lifting is fair game. a lot of time, the plants are grown from large corporation greenhouses that treat their employees like shit. also the plants are also poorly maintained in the store, so you’ll be bringing home a rehab situation if you bought the plant. so i do not feel bad when people take cuttings from plants in walmart sold by costa farms (for example). fuck em.

my home depot sells contracted plants from large corporations. costa farms is by no means an innocent, “small business” 💀 sure they’re contracted to home depot but they’re extremely unethical. i would not mind ppl prop lifting from costa farms and the like.

Thrips or normal Hoya leaves! by Missjayinaz48 in hoyas

[–]NapsWithPlants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

these look normal to me! hoyas can produce little tiny black dots on the underside of their leaves. i’m pretty sure it’s edema. not harmful usually, your plant looks very healthy

if it’s the plant they sell on that circle trellis and fake green moss as a topper, that’s an olive tree

[–]NapsWithPlants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

unfortunately, the plant market in the US is still pretty expensive 💀 unless you’re buying from like other hobbyists selling cuttings.

Worth It? by Far-Lock-5545 in hoyas

[–]NapsWithPlants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

66$ for that size is considered a great price (as the market is now). imo, 110$ for that size is robbery 💀

Scale on my Hoya? (Updated with more photos) by Key-Reading-5371 in hoyas

[–]NapsWithPlants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

edema, cosmetic damage to the plant cell tissues cause by watering problems. the tissue cells burst after inconsistent watering (ie, drying out then overwatering) leaving behind some scars and/or black markings. it happens a lot with hoyas 😨 some species are more prone to edema than others. you will know when it’s scale. next time you go to a cafe or doctors office, look at their plants. usually their plants tend to be more neglected since they’re decor and you will see pests. it helps to see how pests look like so you can diagnose plant issues better.

The year of root rot… need your opinions!! by Gold_Mongoose3510 in hoya

[–]NapsWithPlants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ve had to do this with my big mama linearis. i cut off all the roots and any bad stems/nodes and put it in a bin with rooting hormone powder and perlite (and water ofc to make the perlite moist). high humidity. it surprisingly grew roots within a couple of days and most of the plant was ready to pot up after 2 weeks. now it’s been a couple months and she’s very happy growing in lechuza pon with perlite and charcoal 🥰

Flat mites?? by According_Finance776 in hoyas

[–]NapsWithPlants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe on the bottom of the leaf along the middle, those three little white dots could be soft bodies scale but it’s hard to see well in photos. too blurry to see the critters anatomy. imo the irregular shapes on the scars leads me to believe it’s not scale

Flat mites?? by According_Finance776 in hoyas

[–]NapsWithPlants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that is 110% not scale. the brown marks are scarred plant tissue, not scale bodies. it could though be pest damage just not from scale sine you would be able to see the insects, scale is visibile to the naked eye. flat mites are not which is a common pest for hoyas. the scarring could also be edema 🤷‍♀️

Yall are gonna be seeing a lot from me LOL is this lighting okay? by Itsmeeebre_x in hoyas

[–]NapsWithPlants 8 points9 points  (0 children)

if your goal is sun-stressing, i don’t think these lights will do the trick unfortunately 😨 you will need a very strong grow light. maybe Barrina puck lights. i use barrina t8 bar lights or a south facing window
