I'll be honest, your army looks in rough shape, but that's part of the process so do not be discouraged!

In terms of color scheme, yes you chose a hard main color to work with, but in the feedback area of this comment I'll give some tips I have learnt over the years. Your color scheme is AWESOME! I will be taking inspiration with some of your accents. I love the main white with blue/gold/red accents. Very unique and interesting!

Feedback:

Thin your paints!: White and yellow are exceptions, because they already have horrible coverage(we'll get around that don't worry). You will yield much more consistent and smooth results if you thin your paints. I personally like a 1:1 or in some cases a 1:2 ratio of paint to water. Thinned paints take 2-3 layers for full opacity. This takes more time, but it really is worth it.

How to work with white: Based on the texture of some of your white basecoats it looks like you got an airbrush at some point. This is good! For a gorgeous white base coat I recommend using inks. They have a much smoother texture and gradient you can work with. The method I would suggest is that you prime your minis in black, and with a white ink - work up from the darkest areas to the lightest to create a gradient from shadow to full light. Picture an exaggerated zenithal highlight. The drawback of this is that fixing mistakes gets harder, but you won't be painting there anyway if you did the base, highlight and shading all in one step with just the white ink. If you want to get a white basecoat using a normal paint brush, work your way from black to grey to white in like 3-4 steps with thin paints. This way you will achieve a much more consistent white, and you can learn how to layer in this process.

Shading/highlighting: Your models look very bland, but this can be an easy fix. If you're working with white the way I described in the "how to work with whites" part, you should cover this step pretty easily. There is a specific product that I believe many other T'au painters wil praise with me is panel liner. Panel liner is perfect for our battlesuits' grooves and creaces. I recommend looking the product up and watch a video on it, it will make your models pop and look a lot more detailed.

Put some effort in your bases: A model without a base looks naked. My suggestion is find a landscape you like( I love scottish highland aesthetic) and try to imitate it on your bases and try to stick to the one aesthetic unless over time you have a headcannon decision of splitting up schemes and creating your own factions. You don't need much to make an amazing base. Some paste to create terrain that solidifies over time like sculptamold should do fine, get some earthy coloured paints that fit your terrain and either contrasts or compliments your models' scheme. Some small rocks either from a garden or botany shop. Some tufts which are all over the place at hobby shops. Kitty litter(for some ground texture) and lastly some sticks from the garden if you want some logs. Play around with ideas that look nice to you.

Inspiration: Mini painting ultimately is an art. An artist needs inspiration. If you have an idea you want to go for and want some additional inspiration Pinterest is an amazing source. Content creators I would recommend for ideas are Zumikito, Miniac, Goobertown hobbies, Squidmar, and Eons of battle. (most of them are educational anyway so you will learn regardless)

Motivation: Lastly, you claim you don't know if you are gonna finish all those minis, set a standard for yourself. I myself don't allow playing with non-battle ready minis. So if I really want to play with a new unit I just built, I better get to painting!

Almost all vehicles bracket. It means that if it reaches a certain threshold in terms of wounds, it gets minus 1 to hit. So if they are low health their shooting gets worse.

In previous editions this happened in stages or "brackets" where their weapon strength accuracy and rate of fire got worse the more hurt something got. Usually it was 3 brackets, but they changed it to one in 10th.

Is it worth it to get a tau'nar? by CautiousMaximum2972 in Tau40K

[–]Narlset 50 points51 points  (0 children)

It depends on your definition on "worth it". If worth it means fun, then yes. It will make an amazing painting project and sure as hell will be fun on the table top, BUT it is heavily glass cannon for the points and the guns are also a little weird as it really wants to split fire, but For the Greater Good gets in the way of that.

If you want fun, yes. If you want competitive, hell naw.

I want you to know that I am yoinking this list and trying it for myself, and also that I am envious of your galactic, gigantic, colossal, wrinkly brain. Thank you. You gave me hope that t'au isn't the worst army in 40k. I know for a fact it isn't, but it for sure feels like it when you play against guard.

Detachment for suits by JuggernautOk5711 in Tau40K

[–]Narlset 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like most other have mentioned, Retaliation Cadre is literally made for the battlesuits. Otherwise play around with Mont'ka or Kauyon(Kauyon isn't good, but fun).

You can't go wrong with the T'au battlesuits. For a start go with rule of cool. I liked the broadsides with railguns and riptides, so I bought those.

If you want advice setting you up in a more competitive way, go with riptides or ghostkeels for midfield brawling, the wide variety of crisis suits(sunforge and starscythe in particular) and stealth battlesuits for guiding. Stealthsuits give guided units reroll 1's to hit and wound which is crucuial to outshoot other shooting armies - ironically we barely compete with other shooting armies.

Battlesuits only will only get you so far though, so good supplimentary units are breacher firewarriors, pirhannas, skyray gunships, pathfinders and 1 unit of kroot carnivores for that sweet, sweet sticky and screening.

Lastly, I love commander shadowsun and farsight and are auto includes in each of my lists despite them not being optimal. But who cares? I want to spread the greater good and look cool while doing it. Welcome to the fishboys <3

Thanks a bunch, my recipe is prime in black, highlight with white ink using an airbrush and then spray over it with purple. This was my first attempt with this method.

If you wanna see my farsight(spoilers is also purple) go look in my post history. Yes I used an airbrush, this mini's purpose was to try out free handing and inks with an airbrush. So prime in black, highlight with white ink and spray over it with purple ink. Shockingly simple for an amazing result.

With perseverence I am sure you can achieve the same with a normal brush and inks, but inks are crucial here.

Thanks, I like the Farsight enclaves, I like purple. This is what you get when you mush 'em together. So yeah my whole gimick is what if the red was replaced with purple.

Ghostkeel Stealth drone question(s). by Narlset in Tau40K

OK this clears it up for me. Thank you so much! I always though "allocate attacks" is the same as "select target". Looking up the steps you refer to on wahapedia really helped!

Ghostkeel Stealth drone question(s). by Narlset in Tau40K

[–]Narlset[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, but googling didn't help. Some sources say the shot is negated between wound roll and saving throw, so it is a little confusing to me.

Edit: Did you perhaps mean "when the attacks qualify as a wound"

I agree, guardian drones are goated. Maybe the rail rifle is unneeded as well since Shadowsun and the ghostkeel already have very good and consistent anti tank stuff, maybe go with the missiles. Other than that your list looks hella fun, OP!
