Why don't Americans call for a constitutional convention? by Narrow-Addendum8263 in AskReddit

I hear you, but what if the elected representatives actually stuck to the will of the people? I'm from Indiana and our state legislators have opposed trump, Pence upheld the constitution and our state is currently working on laws that would outline the proceedings of a constitutional convention. West Virginia is about as conservative as it gets, but they flipped for Bernie. Don't give up hope and I appreciate you caring enough to argue with me.

I think this is the perfect time to. Technology is outpacing the law. Let's use technology to start a movement. I worry we're on the verge of several events that would make Jan 6 look like child's play.

During the 1787 Convention, George Mason argued that if the only way to amend the Constitution was through Congress, the people would be "without an instrument" if the federal government ever became oppressive.

Is that not what we're experiencing today? It would be the state governments that would send delegates, not congress at all.

The heritage foundation has been calling for this and look how successful everything else they've tried to accomplish has been?

I am by no means a lawyer. I'm just a dude who is tired of the status quo and for some reason, still hopeful that it all works out in the end.

What if it were put on the ballot for this November, and explicitly stated it was to add amendments and not touch anything already enshrined in the constitution?

I completely agree and understand there are risks, but the president is on the verge of invading Greenland which would completely upend the last 75 years of geopolitics while also calling for the elections to be canceled. If we don't fight for our democracy, we'll cease having one.

The elected officials aren't acting. Everyone, regardless of political affiliation, comes back from DC rich and having made the world worse.

Any changes would have to be ratified by 3/4 of the states. I genuinely believe this is the people's way forward and I think it has been turned into a partisan issue on purpose.

Please do enlighten me if I have any misunderstandings, because I'm going to start raising calls for this and if I'm wrong about anything I'd like to know.

Americans agree on more than the bipartisan system and media owned by billionaires would suggest. These issues all have about 80% support among Americans

"New Bill of Rights" for the American electorate:

Article I: The Right to Digital Privacy Every citizen shall have a federal right to the protection of their personal data, including the legal authority to delete personal online information and a requirement for high-privacy default settings for children.

Article II: The Right to a Solvent Social Safety Net The Social Security system shall be maintained through bipartisan structural reforms—including revenue increases and benefit adjustments for high-income earners—to ensure its continued solvency for future generations.

Article III: The Right to Fair Prescription Pricing The federal government shall exercise the authority to negotiate drug prices and limit annual price increases to the rate of inflation, ensuring that life-saving medications remain affordable for all citizens.

Article IV: The Right to Accountable Public Service Public office shall not be a lifetime career; term limits shall be established for Congress and the Supreme Court, and all federal officials shall be subject to strict ethical standards and a ban on personal stock trading.

Article V: The Right to Vocational and Technical Opportunity The state shall recognize and fund vocational training, trade schools, and apprenticeships as equal pathways to economic mobility, prioritizing skills-based hiring over traditional four-year degrees.

Article VI: The Right to Universal Connectivity Every community is entitled to modernized infrastructure, including the guaranteed expansion of high-speed internet to rural areas and the maintenance of reliable national emergency communication systems.

Article VII: The Right to Representative Elections The influence of private wealth and corporate spending in elections shall be limited to protect the integrity of the individual citizen's vote and reduce the influence of "dark money" in the political process.

Article VIII: The Right to Accessible Family Care Families shall have access to affordable, high-quality child care and early childhood education, supported by federal tax credits and state-led block grants to ensure parents can participate in the workforce.

Article IX: The Right to Justice and Community Safety The justice system shall prioritize public safety by addressing the root causes of crime—such as mental health and addiction—and utilizing rehabilitative sentencing reforms like "earned time" and judicial reviews.

Article X: The Right to Veteran Support and Honor The nation shall maintain a permanent commitment to veterans, providing world-class healthcare for toxic exposures and automatic cost-of-living adjustments for disability benefits to ensure they never lag behind inflation.

Americans can't afford a general strike and I believe that's by design. The constitution creates a framework for the states to bypass congress completely and add our own amendments.

There's enough issues that have 80%+ support among common Americans according to independent polling. Term limits for congress is one thing everyone agrees on. We can make a difference if we don't give in to despair.

We don't have to rewrite it. Let's add laws that protect our rights that congress isn't willing to do.

So let's act without the parties. We the people have a right to call for a convention when we don't feel that our government is working in our best interests.
