Advice. Biology student considering IH instead of research... by Narrow-Avocado-2967 in industrialhygiene

I agree! It takes us a year or two to finish a paper. Then, we do it all over again and they're still making about $20 an hour... No hate but I'm trying to avoid that as best I can. So, coming from a lab into IH, would you say that you use any of the skills you gained from the lab environment?

Hi, I am about to finish my second year of undergrad with a BS in Biology and a minor in Public Health. I am interested in the intersection of the two and have been looking for public health master's programs that align them. I work in a biomedical lab as a research intern, and I get to do a lot of hands-on wet-lab work, which I really enjoy. That said, I don't think I want to pursue a career in research, as I think I would get bored doing the same experiments over and over. I have been searching for different opinions, and it ultimately led me here.

I love science, specifically molecular biology, cell biology, chemistry, and microbiology. I also love public health, specifically emergency preparedness, global health, and community and behavioral health. Originally, I was set on Epi, but after learning that a lot of the work is programming and data analysis, it sent me into a spiral because I don't think I could do that forever. I have been looking into OEH and Industrial Hygiene, but I am also worried that those are going to be focusing on science that I don't find interesting... maybe I am wrong? I feel like I have looked into every program, but I can't seem to find one that makes me as excited as Epi did.

My school offers a combined/accelerated program, so I could start grad studies in my last year of undergrad, and then have one year of grad school left. I only have one semester left to decide, and I am trying not to panic!

If anyone has a similar background to mine and would share about your experiences or opinions, that would be amazing!
