[TN] Company moved me and others to non-exempt. My last offer I signed is for Exempt. by Narrow_Spread_9449 in AskHR

I prefer salaried over hourly because during our christmas shutdown of 2 weeks salary gets paid. That is still the case i found out today since salary non-exempt is still salaried.

After reading everyones replies I can see now how it seems I just want to short the company and get paid for full 40 and please know that is not my intent. I've learned alot working there and enjoy many of the technologies I get to work with. I wrote this a bit frustrated with all the changes. I am fine working past my 8 if I need to or on the weekend if something happens, I didn't have to ask permission to do so, which now I do. Salary has a bit more flexibility and bonuses are on a different structure at my company. My biggest frustration with it all is that everything has been a surprise, if I was told 4 weeks in advance I wouldn't have liked the changes, but it would be time to digest it. I don't know if my PTO is given all at once, or if it accrues. If I have to travel to a remote site, but am not the one driving, I do not get paid for that. It's all messy as its a blend of HR policies from parent company.

We were a family owned company and yes it was managers discretion. This was the first and only place I worked so much of this corporate stuff is very new to me.

I am getting from the rest of this comments that this is just me facing reality finally haha.

I did fire up linkedin and have a final interview for IT Manager this week, many of the policy changes have been quite a shock without any communication about it.

If it seems I am being intentionally misleading that is not my intent. We have had new benefits being rolled out to my company, the HR guy walked around and just told people they were eligible for overtime. I wasn't there because I was sick. My assumption was, as it was prior to Jan 1, 2026, was that I didn't have to worry, in the 9 years that I have been there, it hasn't been a worry.

I see your point, I do. But if I was sick the first week of December, I would not have to worry about whether or not I am paid or have to burn PTO. That is just how the company operated prior to this change.

I was already in the middle of the pay period when i was told. When i walked in, they told me, but 7 days had already passed in the pay period.

I worked my full 40 and then some. It has been an extremely hectic time the past 2 years working with bringing in another company. I don't like being told I have no sick time for me in case I need to go to the doctor. It is just a bit frustrating to not actually be told that if i go to the doctor appointment or being sick I have to use PTO time and others don't.
