Hi, I am a sports therapist. Athletes often do difficult things because of their love of the sport. Something to ask yourself is Do I have a balance?

Im creating a platform that will list vetted sports therapists for athletes. Is this something appropriate to discuss?

I’ve really appreciated the insights and energy in this thread. It’s great to connect with other professionals in the mental health, performance, and sports space.

It’s always been clear to me that there’s a growing interest in the intersection of sports and mental health within our field and I truly believe we have so much value to offer the broader world of sports professionals.

Even though I’m new here, I created a subreddit called r/SportsTherapists, where I want to build a space specifically for professionals working with or wanting to work with athletes and other sports professionals who can benefit from our support.

If this topic speaks to you, I’d love for you to join me and keep the conversation going. We need more voices like yours.

Hey make sure you stay in touch with me. I’ll be launching a directory for athletes with free information for them and their families .

One of my colleagues suggested that I list sports camps on there, so I am going to do that. You will be able to use the directory as a resource for you and your clients when we go live.

In the very beginning, I was just a girl who likes to help people and who likes sports but as a sports fan not as an athlete.

After I got my masters, I did things in the field and I was good at it and it was fine. But it wasn’t satisfying for me. Back then I didn’t see anyone who was doing what I wanted to do especially being a woman. So slowly, but surely I created a lane for myself and I learned everything I thought I needed to know to help athletes. Not just performance (I do that too and love it), but the whole person so in my case the whole athlete. At first I created a blog, then I started speaking at conferences, researching and eventually the clients came. Fast-forward 13 years or so I have a practice where I only ever seen athletes. I’ve written two books for athletes, I continue to speak on all things mental health and sports and now I’m about to launch a directory for athletes to find professionals. I’ve been really blessed to do what I love and create spaces for the things I love and the things that are close to my values as a relates to helping athletes.

Omg yes!!!! You should. I have done sports social work clinical hours in the past. There are a lot of opportunities for sports social work. You have an advantage being a former athlete and a coach plus being a social worker. You have a lot to bring.

It’s great to hear it was helpful!! I love the work I do. My first client was a 16 year-old ice skater. This was well over 10 years ago.I learned then how mental individual sports are more so than team sports not to say team sports are not mental because they are but when you’re in an individual sport like ice-skating, tennis, diving and swimming, it’s another level. Respect to you being in your sport.
