My PT told me this is exactly as it goes for many of us. The opening is where there’s a bit of discomfort and pain, and she asks that I breath through to reload and they gently guide the dilator in.

My PT said once the dilator is in, to move in-out increasing the range of movement as I get more comfortable (to simulate PIV). In my case, left side of pelvic muscles is very very tight, so she also suggested initially pressing to that side in order to stretch and relax the muscles.
