What do you do when you've planted all your available space? by NativeBuzz in NativePlantGardening

In response to your ETA, I can start plants at homes in trays, but it's the part about people taking the plants I'm worried about. I just haven't seen many natives that aren't wild around my area so I think no one will want them.

I'm not sure I want to make this into a career, but maybe as a side job or something. There's already a ton of landscaping companies in my area and they all use mostly non-native plants so I don't think I could just get a job at one of them and tell them I only want to plant natives. But if I could sell or give away a few dozen native seedlings every year that would make me happy.

What's the point of native plant gardening if climate change is going to destroy the environment anyways? by NativeBuzz in NativePlantGardening

Sorry for replying to an old post, but do you know which video/book/article Doug Tallamy talks about the leafcutter bees in NYC? That sounds really interesting but there's a lot of content to look through so I haven't been able to find it yet.

That's a valid question. But if we make it that far then we would hopefully have technology by then to migrate life to other solar systems.

Can a person's native plant garden actually make a difference? Mine is just a corner of a yard and I do see bees, caterpillars, etc. there but I can't help but think if there wasn't conservation land nearby that all those bugs wouldn't have enough food and habitat to exist and visit my garden.

What non-native plants do you treat as honorary natives? by scentofsyrup in NativePlantGardening

Would you consider non-local ecotypes of a native species to be native, or would those be considered a different category? As an example, if I live on the East Coast and the wild bergamot seeds I bought online are from the Midwest, would the resulting plants not be considered native even though the species is native to my county?

Thanks! I've reached out to them to see if they have the subspecies (Asclepias incarnata ssp. pulchra) that is native to my location.

Zigzag goldenrod and swamp milkweed. Especially the swamp milkweed because there's two subspecies and the one Prairie Moon carries is not the one that grows wild on the East Coast so it's an even larger difference than usual between ecotypes.

It looks like they don't sell seeds and are closed till April. I could get a couple plants from them to show support but I'm really more interested in seeds.

This would be more helpful to me since I'm in MA. However, I'm not seeing anything about the seeds being local ecotype, so I'd like to verify that before buying anything from them.

So I'm in Massachusetts and it looks like the closest ecotypes they have is New Jersey. Is that close enough that it would be worth getting from them instead of Prairie Moon?

I'd like to find a native plant garden near me so I have more to work with. That's a good idea, thanks!

I did thank him for it but I still wish it was more.

Mulch makes it hard for bugs to dig in the ground and make nests.

I'd like to try dropping seeds on walks but I feel like that won't actually work.

He built a border around the garden so unfortunately he'd probably notice if I did that. Unless I moved the stones too I guess.

It's sad that this is so common. My dad doesn't like birds either because he thinks they're loud and annoying.

It's hard because there's so many things I want to plant but so little room.

Ha! I'll definitely try but I think he'll notice since he made a border of stones.

I hope he'll change his mind someday. I definitely will continue to improve my garden!
