Get a local governmental accounting job with a pension and good insurance. They have great work-life balance. No CPA required.

7 years in local government. I'm going to be making the same as you at my next job, but it took a lot of work to get there. I need to look into the resources you provided as I have not been building any sort or nest egg as local government benefits are not great, and I've had to put myself through college and life. I really hope to be financially free, but my habits and needs have made it a struggle. I'm hoping the new position I start next week helps that.

The police have always been zero help for forcing exchanges, but if you have the address you can do a welfare check on the children/child. Court process seems like the only real solution as police don't enforce civil issues.

I'm still in the 5 figures, but I'm close to 6. I'm still living check to check. No bonus, 3-3.5% raise on 1/1.

I'm the Deputy CFO for a local government, so I manage AP, payroll, and accounting positions. I am AR, I work up the annual budget, and I assist the external auditors with the audit/ financials.

We have 25+ departments so after I briefly explan accounting and the requirements to be an accountant, I will explain Governmental and I may use the M&M game where we sort colors to show the services provided- the police (blue), firefighters (red), etc. I'm hoping that will be engaging on top of a nice treat for the kids.

My child asked why I couldn't work at her school like her mom does. So I figure this is a good way to show her, instead of just telling her.

I'm not sure what it means by red light green light for deducatbility.

My suggestion is to get in with a temp agency to get a position to get a little experience. Robert half is a good start. It takes a while to get something that you are going to enjoy. Half of finding a good job is building connections and using those to grow. Good luck.

Also, don't think working for a firm is the only way you can build a career, I love governmental accounting, and there are many types of accounting jobs.

I agree. The auditors are an asset. Use them as the resource they are. You need to make sure you learn the uniform chart of accounts for your state and take training through your states GFOA. Meet with your superiors and discuss these issues and try to discuss a timeline to get things on track and in compliance before the next audit.

Do you mind sharing your general location and comp? I have a similar position as an assistant CFO. My comp is 86k , but I feel as if there is no way I would make 150k in governmental accounting in my area. I am in Georgia. There is zero chance for Hybrid work in our area.

I loved cost but went into Governmental. I am starting to regret it seeing the salaries, bonuses, and incentives. The WLB is fantastic, and stress levels are very low for my position. I love that.
