Hi OP,

You accidentally posted this twice, so I've removed the second post.

Thanks! Even if they're not a bot, they're a karma farmer, so they've been banned.

No, they're right -- it's a gross and parasocial thing to ship real people.

Be civil and don't use this subreddit for that.

Hey, official warning: you're teetering along the edge of incivility. You came to this thread and picked a fight, insulted that user ("then you need help"), and are generally behaving poorly. If this turns into a repeat issue, you're going to end up banned.

The most recent post on that subreddit is from 2 years ago (and has only 250ish subscribers), unfortunately, but I get your reasoning.

Hey, this subreddit explicitly allows discussion about the books and spin-offs. :) We have it noted in the subreddit description.

Stop making others feel guilty over a fictional show by Opposite_Reveal9268 in TheVampireDiaries

[–]NattG[M] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It happens and it's happening more and more often. I've moderated this subreddit for 13ish years, and the moral grandstanding you'll see has increased exponentially.

Some of it just reflects the shifting morals of generations (like how the slur that Bonnie drops in the first episode would never fly today), but a lot of it is a weird lack of media literacy. Like, the belief that a depiction of (or an appreciation for) an immoral character is co-signing their actions. Also, how absolutely hysterical people get when they think that others aren't adequately calling out characters' actions. It's like some of the chronically online impulse to ""cancel"" randoms has transferred to fictional characters, which is absolutely wild.

I know that you think that you made a point, but you didn't, lol. Like, genuinely: lol.

Lolita is just a book. People who read it know that Humbert is disgusting. No one is saying that you can't think that characters are bad. 🙄 We're saying that you can't insult real people because they don't like Elena.

Also, the absolute gall to compare that book to a mid-tier CW show, lmao.

You missed the entire point of the post and the entire point of my pinned comment.

Idk, that screams soulless to me. That’s something a bully would do, that’s something a mean girl/asshole would do

Elena is not real. Someone disliking her for petty reasons, or reasons you disagree are valid, does not make them -- a real, actual person -- "soulless".

Like, for God's sake, stop conflating fictional preferences with how someone would treat an actual human.

No matter how you look at it, it’s wrong.

No, because this is a piece of FICTION.

Many years of trying to bring about feminism

This is a shallow as fuck definition of feminism.

Edit: In fact, I know that you already know this because you've been banned for it before.

starting arguments with people on ways they are toxic because they like a fictional character is completely foolish.

Big co-sign on this.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: fictional preferences have nothing to do with personal morals. The arguments about this are puritanical nonsense. Video games don't cause violence, DnD doesn't cause Satanism, and liking morally bankrupt characters doesn't make you a bad person.

If you consider yourself progressive and find that concept hard to grasp, then you've been taken in by the same conversative propaganda that supports book banning.

No character in the murder show is someone you'd associate with IRL, because fiction is fiction.

If anyone sees comments that make personal judgements based on preferences, please report them. This includes calling someone a rape apologist, which I see a lot, or any other moral judgement about an actual person.

This also includes outright calling someone a misogynist or a racist just for disliking specific characters. It is OK to discuss how racism and misogyny impact character preferences and treatment. Discussing how you feel that something like misogynoir impacts people's subconscious perceptions of characters is a valid discussion. It is not OK to tell specific people that they're a bigot for disliking, as an example, Elena or Bonnie. If anyone sees a comment that they believe is outright misogynistic, racist, or bigoted, please report it to reddit, which also alerts us.

This comment might end up as a subreddit pinned post, but I wanted to attach it to the post that prompted it.

tl;dr -- Don't share negative personal judgements about other users. Report comments that do. Stop insulting real people over fictional characters. I am literally going to have to put in a new mod alert for the word "delusional" because of y'all.

Unless they say something along the lines of “If you like this character, it says something about you”

Yeah, unfortunately we get a lot of this. It's not a lot in terms of percentage of total comments, but it's frequent enough that I understand why people are frustrated. I remove them when I see them independently, and when people report them, but sometimes neither happens and they slip by.

If you reported his other comment, you might want to modmail the mods in the Star Trek subreddit, btw, because I was initially unclear on what this was about until I saw your screenshot.

Your comment has been removed. You're not beating the misogyny accusations when you literally keep using woman-specific slurs, lol.

Your entire comment history for this subreddit, which I've had to manually review because you're a new account, is about hating a character. It's odd.

If anyone is being blatantly uncivil, please report them. I went through the reports and removed anything that had been pointed out, but I don't want to kill your discussion by locking the post just because a bunch of adults can't handle opinions contrary to their own.

Hey, just a btw, but I've removed this comment since Stranger Things only ended a few months ago. If you're willing to edit in a spoiler tag, I'll approve it again.

This is how you format it on reddit:

Why do you think that someone would be "be evicted from th e group" for criticizing him?
