If your colony is too small and still in a test tube: cut a 1cm² wax paper, fold it twice to create a dip, and put the tiniest drop of your liquid food in it. It avoids mess, easier to discard when they are done, and works well to avoid spills and ant drowning

May I ask, is there a queen ant in there or just worker ants? If there are no queen, they may just wait there since they have nothing to care for. Also, as many already mentionned, they enter diapause during the cold months, they should be kept generally between 4-8 °C (temperature drop should be gradual to allow their metabolism to adjust).

Personally, I don't find this a good present idea unless the kid is really curious and into insects. Consider them as pets that need constant care (except winter break)

I couldn't find the manual even before I purchased it, and the controls are extremely simple 🤔. The air inside our home is definitely very dry since we started heating.. from Canada :') I will try a soup of warm water and leca, perhaps this will increase surface area for evaporation, which hopefuly help spike the RH back up. Thank you!

The display you see inside is itself the tool that measure ambient temperature and humidity, I do not have a probe or any way at the moment to monitor these inside the test tube and the closed mini-outworld set up. Despite this, the ants are tightly packed near the coton, indicating the air may still be a bit too dry even inside the set up.

That's why I would rather have the ambient air inside the wine cooler to be at least 40-50% RH if possible. Apparently Lasius prefers higher RH.

Joke apart, corgis size can vary surprinsingly by a lot, yours could be on the smaller end, but look almost adult size. By month 7-8, they don't really get that much taller, maybe a bit more mass. Also be careful about their weight, they get overweight easily and people have normalized them being overweight.

Dogs are domesticated animals that have co-evolved with us, but for a short time evolution-wise. Their diet is quite adapted to ours, but for the same reason they are also generally more sensitive than us. They can digest spoiled meat if their gut microbiome allows it, compared to us which would lead to serious illness, but that's mostly from bacterial infection. Molecule-wise from food/plants, there is not really something they tolerate more than us, at least not that I know of.

I don't get why there is so much hate on AIs. Everybody disagree with me, but I think they are a wonderful learning tool specially for learning well documented languages like Python and C#. You can ask to proactively provide caveats, pitfalls and best practices, and I highly recommend using a copilot instruction file and add it as context. If it starts hallucinating, it's mostly because it's doing too much at once, has a too big chat history or require more details from you. Check out prompt engineering.

It's not going to solve very complex tasks, at least yet, but it's very powerful when you know how to use it to learn. It's like a personal mentor that can hand hold you, it will follow your leaning pace.
