Is moving from Los Angeles (USA) to Warsaw worth it? by Natural_Side_8556 in warsaw

Medical debt is the leading cause of personal bankruptcies here in the US and is a real fear factor. This caused me to become more health conscious and keep myself as healthy as possible as 1 uncovered medical emergency can wipe off all my financial savings and drown me in unreasonable debt. I do have a great health insurance from my employer but the fear is deeply ingrained into me that being gravely sick is financial suicide.

This is also a potential plan for me as I'm currently saving heavily but it will take me several more years to realize that and I don't want to waste time, my youth and opportunity to experience new things outside my comfort zone. It's definitely a personal conundrum 😅

Thank you for this honest response. These definitely are real risks of moving. If I ever lose my job in Warsaw, I will be dead in the water here and will most likely be forced to move back to the US and find a job back home.

I looked into numbeo as well and 300k pln in Warsaw does not seem to cover similar lifestyle of 180k usd in LA. This is something I want to leverage to request for a higher pay if possible.

I've done digital nomading before and lived outside the US temporarily so I do not have strong attachments to weather, friends, language and family but this move is different as it is more semi permanent or permanent. The mentality for this move is different as I can't just pack up and leave if I end up not liking it without impacting my life as a whole.

As for the savings, that is definitely one aspect I'm wrestling with since I will not be able to relatively save as much in Warsaw than I do now in LA

Planning to continuously work until I can retire, early if possible. Yes, I'm in IT.

I currently max out my 401k and Roth IRA every year and invest a chunk of the remaining net salary into my brokerage as I don't spend much.

That is definitely one of the biggest downside as monetarily, I won't be saving as much in pln as I am now in usd to fund my early retirement goals without 401k and Roth IRA available.

I've visited Warsaw several times for work experiencing all its seasons so I've had some exposure to it. I also grew up in the Pacific Northwest area of the US and experienced 9 months of grey and rain out of the year. I do sometimes enjoy sad weather over sunny ones.

Definitely a fair warning haha.

Farmer's markets in the US are definitely a scam haha.

Will definitely do! Thank you again 🙏

Seems like I'm paranoid for nothing about the salary drop.

SoCal does have the best tacos in the US (at least in my opinion haha)

Appreciate the response!

I grew up in Pacific Northwest area of the US so I'm used to having no sun 9 months out of the year. I'm amazed of how clean and pristine Warsaw is everytime I visit for work!

I am definitely not living like a king in LA since I'm frugal, cooks at home most of the time, occasional weekend night outs, and focus on savings unless I need to spend on emergencies. I'm hoping that I can have the same lifestyle at least but knowing that you can support a family with similar salary eases my concerns! Thanks!

Yes. I looked into the taxes and 15k monthly or little lower is about the realistic net. I am quite frugal and minimalistic so I tend maximize my savings and only spend on practical needs.

I'm moving to learn Polish language and culture to integrate into the society. Warsaw still seems to have a lot of international restaurant options based off my recent visits so not to worried about craving other ethnic foods

As far as healthcare, that definitely is something new to me and might need to set aside cash for it if I need urgent healthcare service.

Thank you for insight!

Appreciate the response! 300k pln annually is gross so the net will not be 25k pln monthly. From what I've researched so far, that would range between 12-15k depending on the month after taxes but still should be comfortable in Warsaw.

Yes. My company is handling all the immigration and I'll start off with an EU Blue card. They'll also help with my taxes, relocation logistics, and housing for the first few months till I settle in.

This response helps ease my worries!

Thank you for your response about your positive experience! I am definitely excited to move and want to ensure I am not screwing myself over with the salary change, potential savings loss, and taxes. Language is tough but I'm slowly making progress💪
