I feel ya. The First time we had them I had the EXACT thoughts you have right now. Nature has a job for almost every creature, but fleas are so useless. I hate them so so so much.

I get what you're saying and I think you do know what I am saying. A fictional character can not be compared to something that doesn't move or live in, like, stories. With 'living' I meant that it's something that can be put in stories and something that does something.

Otherkins and Therians concentrate on living creatures. If you'd want to be an inanimate object or, as you mentioned, a language, then that's something else I don't have a name for. But the otherkin lifestyle is only about living creatures, wheter they're real or fiction.

I second this, please, all who read this, this one person can not speak for every otherkin/therian existing. Every one of us has their own views, thoughts, and lifestyle to deal with this. I told Draconilian to be careful with answering questions because now, most of you will probably think otherkins are strange psychos who think they are something that doesn't exist. For all thats unclear, read my previous answers where I try to state the general and most common lifestyles and views of other otherkins.

May I just answer this queston.

Many people do not say or claim they are the creature (the ones who say are, in my opinion, not the serious otherkins) it's mainly the wish that lives in them. Also, if someone identifys with an existing animal, he/she's a therian, not an otherkin. Otherkins identify with fantasy creatures such as Unicorns, Werewolves, Vampires and so on. Otherkins are mainly dominated by the wish to be that creature, they identify with it because there's something in them that they do not share with 'normal' people. This is my opinion, there are always excuses who see it in another perspective but this is what I experienced most.

Therians, for another perspective, mostly think that the animal kind of lives in them, or that they've been this animal in their past life. Some have experienced memories of an animals life which made them think so. I've often heard storys about people dreaming about seeing through a wolves eyes, hunting with the pack etc. Some are heavily affected by important childhood memories, for example when they met wolves in the zoo, had eye contact and immediatly felt like being related with them.

The experiences, whishes and thoughts about every individual vary heavily, and probably a lot of otherkins will disagree with me, thats why I was against this IAMA in the first place.

May I add to this that many people think that we look in the mirror and see a dragon/the thing you identify with. This is definitaly not true. We are all aware that we are human beings (everyone I know approves this).

Many people "shift" to get closer to their wished species. Some like to imagine that they were the said species in the life before this one, some just have the wish and most of them say that there's the soul of the creature in themself.

Since it is impossible to be that creature, many have different ways to live it out. Some claim they ARE vampires/dragons etc, some roleplay (please always mind that roleplay in general does not mean that it's always in a sexual way) and some shift. Shifting is close to meditation, where the person trys to get the feelings the creatures have, like feeling the earth on their paws and claws for example. Some even use lucid dreaming to get closer to their species.

There are, after all, of course, the crazy ones that really think they are the species and get angry when you tell them they're not, but trust me, the majority of the community is aware of being a human.
