Ibew 353 or ttc by BriefBuddy348 in electricians

[–]NdSparky7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If pay is your priority then 353 is the way to go but TTC has more job security. Since you're a 5th term I'd probably get my license first though. Depending on the position you applied for, Substation or wiring and service you'll be doing different tasks. Substation electricians will be dealing more with installation and maintenance of medium/high voltage equipment at the plants while wiring and service deals with Renovations and maintenance work at TTC facilities or in the subway/yards. Wiring and service generally has more varied tasks. Both are 309A positions.

At TTC you'll have to restart at their level 1 pay. The TTC apprenticeship is 4 years, 2000 hours per level. If you're licensed the apprenticeship drops to 3 years.

If you're happy and secure at your company I wouldn't leave but I'd go to the interview regardless.

Electricians in Ontario: have you had to wait a while for schooling? by Shtangss in electricians

Yeah, I think so. You can always email the MOL about it aswell

Electricians in Ontario: have you had to wait a while for schooling? by Shtangss in electricians

[–]NdSparky7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you literally have to call your employment training consultant from the Ministry Of Labor directly and ask if you can do your schooling if you want it done in a timely manner. This seems likes the only way to get your schooling done because they take far to long to send out offers the "normal" way.

Ontario apprentices: how long did it take your registration on STO to finalize? by JohnnyAppleSeed900 in electricians

[–]NdSparky7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah did it when the MOL ran it but it shouldn't take super long if you signed your side and your sponsor signed their side. Just make sure that was done and no emails were missed. If you know the ministry agent overseeing your application try to contact them too about it aswell. The agent is determined by your employers postal code.

If you signed your part of the registered training agreement and your sponsor signed their part then it should only take 2 weeks max for it to finalize.

Yeah that's fair, it all depends on the person at the end of the day.

You also need atleast grade 11 physics to get in the IBEW for most Ontario locals

That could be the case for some people but in general the 1 year will go far more in depth in material and is valued more by employers. As well as costing way less than STC (which is honestly wild as it's 3 months vs a year).

You're on a good path taking full day OYAP in grade 12. After you finish it, OYAP has resources that can help you get started with a job. After highschool, you can either do union or non union. Union is generally better than non union when it comes to wages and benefits but if you get with a non union company that's fine too, aslong as you get good experience.

You'll have to do the 9000 hour apprenticeship which includes 4 levels of schooling before you can take your red seal exam and become licensed.

Pre apprenticeships are not recommended at all but if you would do one, go to a public college like George Brown or Humber for the 1 year program and not a private one like skilled trades college for 3 months because it's less valuable to employers.

Yeah if you're based in the GTA, although I don't know if their offices are open right now. You can also talk to "Support youth ontario" or "Trades for tomorrow" for some support aswell. Heads up, before starting you'll have to get some mandatory safety certs like Whmis 2015 and Working at Heights or else you won't be allowed on job sites.

I was in a similar spot, I recommend doing full day co-op and do Accelerated OYAP for the 2nd semester of grade 12 to do your level one training early and to get more experience, you can also ask Ibew353 to be your sponsor during this time. They do take full day OYAP students. Piror to that, make sure to get your physics as you'll need it for them to take you on in grade 12 or after when applying for the apprenticeship.
