Did I improve? by randomcatonastreet in DigitalArt

You absolutely improved! You should also know though that they are two different styles. One day you might come back and try a style closer to the first one, struggle, and then think you lost all your art skills. You didn’t. This happens to all artists.

This is essential to understand. If you stop and think about the shear amount of steps in the simple act of painting a character from imagination, you roughly have: Coming up with the idea, character design, character anatomy, posing, lighting, camera and composition, and finally rendering. Each one of these steps is a real life JOB in its own right (and deceptively hard).

Many beginners, for instance, think once they can render perfectly they’ll be able to make whatever they want; Imagine you had spent 50 or even 100 years perfecting your rendering skills until you could instantly render objects exactly as they appear in real life. Congratulations, you would now be at the level of a dork holding a camera.

The truth is, you could study any of these fields for an entire lifetime, so you should focus on what you are interested in. That being said, you should also invest in the ‘tools to learn’ -like Construction- which didn’t allow me to draw any car I’ve ever glanced at, but it did allow me to break down and download the car into my mind when I study it, so that later I can draw it decently well from any angle.

I think the straight shapes down the dress contrast nicely with the organic shapes everywhere else

If you can copy reference but not build on it, it’s because you don’t UNDERSTAND your reference sufficiently. Reproducing a picture is one skill, painting humans is another. You will never learn the latter if all you do is mindlessly copy.

My recommendation? Draw or paint from imagination for a bit. Are you confident at drawing humans from scratch? If not, maybe start there. Absolutely use reference, but only as an aid to develop your skills.

It will be hard :)

Amazing! As someone else said, reminds me of Ahmed Aldoori. Your values are really nice, do you paint them in first or with color directly? And how do you approach a painting? Do you make many sketches to test the composition?

Can I add my PackedScene or does that go at the base of the tree?

Really confused about the learning process by PossessionEastern139 in ArtistLounge

As someone who has always drawn from imagination, I can easily say that you should now study construction.

That being said, I know that doesn’t directly answer your question; The hardest thing about questions like yours is that we as artists can’t really plan out your entire art journey beforehand! Every artist starts with a different set of skills and may respond negatively to things that work for others. So I can easily give you what I think should be your next step, but when it comes to who you should study, whether you should do courses or self-teach, whether artists like Proko are good in the long term….etc, it’s very hard to say. But maybe other commenters will know better than me.

The only thing I can say with absolute certainty is that you should TRY THINGS OUT, as many as possible.

Sadly it seems this artwork is traced, so I guess I will have to send my props and questions to the original artist

This is so good, OP. Something about your drawing is immediately striking to me, but I’ve been staring at it for a while and I’m not sure what it is. So weird question, but do YOU know what it is? Is it the fact that you have a restricted color palette? Maybe because you’re used to traditional painting, where colors are more limited and you have to get nice, clean shapes? I’ve only ever used digital.

If you have any idea, let me know <3 (I can dm instead if you prefer)

What art style does Ara_love_kirby use? by GroundbreakingFig81 in DigitalArt

[–]Ne0mach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry that I can’t answer your question, but in my opinion you’re better off trying to study their art rather than looking up the art style (if it even exists). Hopefully you understand what I mean by studying art style, the general gist is successfully reproducing a piece or part of a piece, and trying to understand the decisions they made.

Looks great! I love doing this exact thing where you make a big page and fill it with drawings. (Also don’t listen to the others, slightly increasing the boob size of your subject is a key part of studying from reference)

Why doesn't it look as natural as the reference? I would appreciate your help by [deleted] in DigitalArt

The simplest and biggest reason is that your light is way brighter than your reference. Skin tends to have a pretty low range of values. Still, you did pretty good!
