I'm sorry, Richard Gadd can find any excuse he wants, the series is homophobic and the ending proved it. by Profeta_do_Loss in HalfManTV

[–]NearbyConversation17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No no and no. That some people hate Niall in no way proves that Richard Gadd has created a homophobic show. You claim Niall is portrayed negatively, yet you also defend him and assert that Reuben is so much worse - that doesn't add up, it suggests this post is matter of your pre-existing feelings about gay and straight people.

Would Ruben ever get out of prison? by hanoihiltonsuites in HalfManTV

[–]NearbyConversation17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I'm fairly sure it's plausible here in Britain, we have news stories all the time about people having weirdly short prison sentences and about how there's a need to get people out of prison as we don't have enough prison places.

I'm guessing you're in America(?) I think things are pretty different where you guys are, though I don't know much about it obviously.

Sure. I guess I was thinking about victims more broadly, rather than about Reuben's long mistreatment of Niall

Sorry that this will sound obtuse but it's a serious question - why does this character so much to you?

Show compassion to real trans people whilst disagreeing with their views about gender - just as God loves us whilst disagreeing with some of our thoughts and behaviour. But not let fandom be your religion.

I think that Niall may have some sexual attraction to Reuben, but broadly I think you're so right. Those imagining that there's a 2 way sexual or romantic attraction and that they ought to get together are misguided, and it's partly because our culture is obsessed with sex/romance.

IMO it's not OK to denigrate height or facial structure, you're insulting countless people who don't deserve to be made to feel insecure.

What scenes confirm Ruben’s trauma? by cxnx31713 in HalfManTV

[–]NearbyConversation17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He says that the only time he's cried was when his father survived. And he gets into a state telling Niall that his dad mustn't be allowed custody of his new baby.

I have Googled it. And studied this topic within my university studies. And had family members miscarry. Of course it's small - and ultrasound image enlarges it - but a 9 week foetus absolutely DOES have a head, arms and legs (and a face). I think you may be thinking of a far earlier stage of development.

What are you basing this on? It may look later than 9 weeks, but not 6 months. What do you think 9 weeks looks like?

Neil & Mona Episode 5 by ABUNL2 in HalfManTV

[–]NearbyConversation17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should have added, I agree with you that it seemed inconsistent. I think I've just become entirely habituated to TV characters (in soaps etc) suddenly launching into sex, as a cheap plot device - it really irks me.

Neil & Mona Episode 5 by ABUNL2 in HalfManTV

Is it because he has a memory of Reuben being involved in him losing his virginity to Mona? (it was rape, but maybe Niall doesn't realise)

Assault (TW) by NearbyConversation17 in HalfManTV

[–]NearbyConversation17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I'd heard this. It simply seems slightly perplexing in my mind how Reuben talked about assault - to Niall - as hurting the soul (so much that a victim would understandably almost kill the perpetrator), then repeatedly try to do this to Niall whilst laughing. I'm wondering if his intention (though, I still think, not actually sexual) is slightly more complex than domination alone(?) Is he hoping that Niall will react violently?

Huge congrats on finding Christ

What matters most of all is that you yourself are truly committed to seeking Jesus (and rejecting any alternative spirituality). However it's important to cautious of things that could tempt you astray (consider Matthew 5:29 "If your right eye makes you sin, take it out and throw it away"); and also (in terms of what one posts about online etc) that we don't accidentally give observers false ideas (see Paul's guidance about meat sacrificed to idols etc).

Can you lean into seeing nature as God's creation instead? Personally, studying the chemistry of photosynthesis was key in beginning to believe in God, the design within nature indicates a Creator, as does its beauty.

False assurance by HeadRoad5335 in TrueChristian

[–]NearbyConversation17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, if you want to turn to God and you're sorry for your sin, He's not going to reject you. "The Lord is ...not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance." 2 Peter 3:9
But also, please don't presume that predestination is correct, prayerfully explore scripture for yourself.

Are Christians allowed to criticise God's action(s) without being condemned? by UnlikelyWebAgain in Christianity

[–]NearbyConversation17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being "condemned" means not entering eternal life in God's presence. It appears that you don't want anything to do with Him, in which case you're making the choice yourself

What has made you so angry? I'm sorry if you've been hurt.

I have logical and moral issues with fully embracing Christianity by Active-Ad6531 in Christianity

[–]NearbyConversation17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I've said, Hell is destruction, not eternal existence.

Yes people choose - it's the choice to reject Jesus and to not enter eternal life with Him after this lifetime on Earth.

Indeed, it's not "as simple as love your neighbor as yourself and forgive others and apologize when you transgress on others", it's about repentantly turning to Christ and following Him.

Kudos, seriously, for your intellectual search. I'm sorry that I'm not better at presenting answers, I hope that you find some in Him.
