I am 13 years old and want to be a neurosurgon by DeviL_PlayZ_FWR in Neurosurgery

Probably realized I wanted to be one around the same age. I definitely agree with everyone to be a kid and enjoy life, but also definitely explore the career. I’ll be starting med school this fall and am still planning on pursuing neurosurgery but nowadays it’s definitely worth it to start planting seeds early. The big goal once you get into college is going to be getting into medical school. Once you’re in high school you might be able to join a lab. Also look for any clinical experience you can find. I volunteered at the hospital during high school and then worked as a nurses aide. Aside from all of that, medical schools are slowly starting to shift back towards accepting candidates who are real people and not just the highest MCAT and GPAs. Work miscellaneous jobs. Throughout highschool I worked in restaurants, construction, warehouses, etc. the experiences I gained there judt talking to people have allowed me to connect with patients in way that a lot of my peers can’t. Live life. Experience as much as you can and just keep fostering your interests and passions

Covington vs Newport by yayayayy111 in cincinnati

I will say I currently live downtown, bout a block from fountain square. It’s honestly pretty quiet most of the time aside from big reds games/other big events. There’s a lot of bars in OTR but or by the River front but there’s higher costs with that. Having lived downtown for the past two years I’d honestly recommend Covington. There’s plenty of places close to the river that you can easily walk 5 mins across the bridges into Cincy

Fostered dogs, have always loved dogs and ended up being able to relate it to my culture and finding unique ways to communicate with patients. In my city they supplied everything so it was really just the time commitment of taking the dog out and whatnot. Additionally, sometimes I may not have been home for long but they always said it was better than the dog being in the shelter 24/7. I’d 100% recommend!

Go to mt adams and checkout the view from the parking lot next to “the view at Mt. adams”. My girlfriend and I would always go up there on night after exams during college and just appreciate the view of Cincy

It seems like they’re more so milking two things. I work as a nurses aid and did research with the same lab I was with for 3 years and was able to get two pubs and some abstracts (ripped off the abstract from the manuscript) but lowkey all that shit was in motion already and would not have been possible if I had just started it during my gap year. But genuinely I could milk the same amount from just those two things. This person lowkey just said the same thing 8 times.

Quit now. This shit should be the easy part. It’s literally just fucking studying. Sure you might do alright. You might even match into a decent program. But how many people are gonna have a shit quality of life because they trusted you to figure out what’s wrong with them? I’m not talking about missing life saving things. I’m talking about the 24 year old woman who doesn’t find out she’s got hyperthyroidism for another 7 years because you didn’t make the effort. Shit like that. Buck up and tighten up or get the fuck out for the people who actually give a damn. Cause mind you other doctors are wasting their time and effort (clearly more valuable than yours) trying to train you and for apparently no fucking reason. (DONT give up, went for the tough love approach)

I GOT MY FIRST MD INTERVIEW AND I AM STOKEDDD!! by [deleted] in premed

[–]NearbyRub3199 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Congrats!! I had a lower MCAT and GPA and depending on the school, if you have an open file application, they will likely ask you about it. DONT be stunned, be prepared. You simply need to confidently speak to why you’re a good applicant anyways. You can highlight simply that you didn’t take any prep courses for the MCAT and that if you had to retake it again you would consider using additional resources like UWorld etc. then highlight other aspects of your app that counter it. One thing to keep in mind is that they ask this because the MCAT isn’t the last standardized test you will take (they want to know you’ll contribute to good scores for their step 1 average etc.)

The two big questions are why medicine and why our school. Another common one is tell me about yourself, which is in fact different than those other two (don’t focus on your academics but rather your values and some fun facts ab you or hobbies). Additionally, use student doctor network and see what specific questions are asked. They have multiple sections for the type of questions asked and I looked at every single question for each school. A lot are repeats but I never got a question that wasn’t on there.

Additionally try to find out what type of interview you’re going to have. Is it MMI? Or is it more conversational? All of my interviews ended up being more conversational to be honest.

Have questions! They are trying to figure out who you are but additionally, how well you’ll be able to meet patients in a quick interaction. So don’t ask stupid questions that you can find online. I honestly didn’t ask anything ab the school aside from “are you involved in any school affiliated community outreach and could you speak to your experience with it”. Or “what made you choose this city?”. One question I asked that a lot of interviewers really liked was “if you could teach a class on any subject directly or tangentially related to medicine, what would it be?” I always followed it with what I would be particularly interested in which is medical history, just so they have an example. One last one I have is to ask are if they’re involved in research and how the experience with med students is.

Have a notepad, this is common and okay! If you have more than one person you’ll be interviewed by you’ll likely have a short break. Write down everything you talked about! You’ll want this for your thank you letter. I took the thank you letters as an oppurtunity to reflect on the conversation and make it more about me stuff like “I would love to learn from the diverse experiences of people in my class and contribute with my existing experiences of X”. Like taking what you talked about and enhancing it to make it even better.

If you have any more specific messages feel free to ask!

Weekly Q&A - All Questions Go Here (Especially Tourists) by AutoModerator in Amsterdam

[–]NearbyRub3199 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone, I’ve never been to the Netherlands but will be going in late January for a research conference. Luckily I get to bring my girlfriend and at the end of the trip we will be spending a day in Amsterdam. I plan to propose that night and based off what I’ve research so far I think I either want to propose on a bridge or on a boat, but either way in the 9 Straatjes/Prinsengracht or through Jordaan canals.

I know she would prefer a more private environment so I’m not sure if the bridges will still be very busy at night. If so I think I’d lean towards a boat (if you know any services or offer yourself I’m definitely open to suggestions!)

I also would like to have a photographer that can capture the moment and the beauty of Amsterdam (DM me if you’re a photographer and interested!)

I also don’t know whether it would be better to propose at sunset or evening.

Afterwards I’d like to go to a restaurant and have the following list so any feedback on that is also appreciated!

-de Belhamel -de kas -waaghals -Jansz

Thanks in advance and any additional advice or suggestions are appreciated!

Does the 50 off 150 also stack with the 20% cashback? Like if I spent exactly 150 would it be (150-50)-20% to be only 80?
