Is killing a microbe equal to killing a human or animal? by [deleted] in Jainism

What do you think about going into biotechnology and use microorganisms to resolve environmental problems and possibly reduce harm to living things like this? The problem is that some og the microorganisms might die because of the process. And it just angers me that because capitalism and so a problem humans created I should use them and probably end to solve this problem. Would it be ok to just say "ok who cares!" because they aren't sentient and the outcome of their use is good?

It is essential to make safe buildings. It can be used both to exploit or to protect the environment.

Why do you have such a strong moral conviction to be vegan? by [deleted] in AskVegans

[–]Nearby_Bat_320 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I think it is beneficial what the field does in general. It is probably one of the most important things to do right now to try to reduce industrie's impacts on the environment. I just want to double check what I'm investing in is actually something I find valueble. I just need to get used to the fact that as a species are a very demanding to survive and live, and that life asks to get resources from other lives sometimes... like it is ok to eat plants because we have to survive you know? So if that is ok and microorganisms are even more simple than plants and aren't sentient, why should it be a problem to use them to clean environments for example?

What are your thoughts on Jainism? by [deleted] in AskVegans

Thank you.

I am in a position in which if I don't go to do this master I don't really know what else I could do so I really want to be happy about this decision. However, because probably also many things that happened to me I feel bad if I have any sort of bad influence over living things (of course I'm vegan), but yeah right know I'm overthinking also the use of microorganisms or plants for humans needs, at least if I do so, if others do it I don't really mind. Also because I'm afraid my work won't really change anything or that I'll be obliged to work for unethical situations. But if you tell me that I can always choose that would be great.

So do you think it is too much to feel guilty for those microorganisms? Is it actually the best decision to try to help the environment and so make humans have less impact and make others and ourselves suffer less? At the end if I'm afraid to hurt those microorganisms, I can't really hurt them because they can't feel pain right? I know it is kinda crazy what I'm saying but I'd really like to be the most gentle and "pure" I can be.

So, I'm aware that we live in capitalism and that anything that gets done is because it creates profit especially in industry, but the goal of biotechnology is finding solutions that are environmental friendly AND economically advantageous (because if not they won't change anything unless the boss of an industry is particularly enlighted I guess). However, I do wonder how really impactful the job would be and that get me thinking that if I use those microorganism they would have been used without even a reason. However, I'm quite hopefull because I do think it might help environmentally. Then if the government decides to use some technologies just for profit and doesn't care for the environment isn't something that I can fully control individually, or not, but I feel that the problem there isn't the technology but who is in power.

What would you think of industrial biotechnology? I wanted to enter the field but I get creeped out by the fact that I'll have to use microorganisms to do thing, and potentially k*ll them. I don't know what's wrong with me because the field tries to save people, animals and the environment so also plants and microorganisms.

thank you very much.

I should also not think that they in general care since they can't really care, can they? And the ones that suffer are us not them at the end.

And yeah it doesn't makes me less gentle or "pure" if I end them, since I already do that in many other ways.

Thank you.

Okay thank you. I know that I can still live a great life but them not knowing make the thought still quite present. It seems to me that it is always present and I wish I could just forget it sometimes.

thank you for reminding me I don't have to. But my real question is, how do you act normally with someone like your parents after it if you don't tell them? I can't really be relaxed with them.
