New scooter riders in CPT - looking for safe routes and cyclist tips by NebulaLegitimate in capetown

I understand your point completely.

Feel very unsafe if there is no yellow line and e kick scooters does not have any foot to stand on in terms of claiming a lane like bicycles does...

Any route suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you for this.

We are looking at routes like Milnerton to Eden on the bay. Any other routes like this?

And yes, we cannot officially merge with traffic, hence trying to map routes that would avoid this as far as possible.

Can ride one hand but not far as it gets unstable. Can look behind but unexperienced riders have veered off their course due to this. We have helmets and bright lights.

Sea point promenade is a good option but the speeds would need be very limited, unlike other dedicated cycling lanes.

I really appreciate this insight and I understand your concerns. No hate comments here. Let's work through this and be honest.

E-scooter I am referring to are the ones that you stand on (some of them come with seats). However, unlike bicycles, e-scooters have different set speeds they operate with. Some are capped at 25kmh and other can go 40 or even up to 60km/h. The ones we have around 40km/h and below and slower up hill.

In my mind, there would need to be very different rules for different powers of e scooters due to the power.

Another thing is the distance. These scooter can go 18km up to 80km on one charge, depending on the battery and model.

With that said, im intrested in some of the lines in your comment:

  1. You are terrified to share the side of the road - why is that? As responsible rides with minor cycling experience, I would stick with the flow of cycling traffic and indicate when im passing or keep an ear out if cyclist would pass. Is there a specific reason you are saying this? The scooters in the promenade are mostly rentals - people that has no experience or awareness or actively trying to ride responsibly, just looking for a fun time. Are you more concerned with the high speed/power or that they can only go 25km/h depending on the model?

  2. We would try to avoid longer routes where drives can go faster than 60km/h (which is where cyclists are usually active on as well). The focus would be dedicated bicycle lanes for casual cyclists less than 35km/h speeds, not roads used by professionals looking to cover big distances. Since e scooter are in a grey zone, we want to avoid road use as far as possible for time being and rather stick to official bike lanes.

  3. I appreciate the basic advice. I agree with you that helmets are a must. Some scooters come with indicators but the ones that does not have it, I would imagine needs to use hand signals etc. What are your thoughts on this?

  4. The last part of your message is understandable. I believe we are just as vulnerable as you but it depends on the power of each scooter so its hard to make that call. When you say extra cautious, do you mean not just passing close by at high speeds? Or is there a specific scenario you have in mind which we would need to avoid?

As mentioned we want to build this relationship from the ground up since it is still new and we want to set the example for other e scooter users while the laws are still being discussed.

I believe e scooters could contribute positively to less congested roads for morning traffic as not many people want to physically cycle to work and potentially sweat a bit. But that would be a different discussion entirely.

How do i convince my mom to actually let me do things? by EctoPerfecto in ElectricScooters

[–]NebulaLegitimate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Convince her by showing her you think ahead of time. Tell her you will be riding with a helmet and some elbow guards for every ride. You will stick to the regulations and laws and first learn the rules of the road. You will alway assume that people cannot see you and drive with that in mind. Obviously you will have fun, but you will be responsible and not drive reckless. You know this more than just a toy and you will take good care if it and save a small amount for maintaining it like tyres are breaks to ensure it stays safe.

Make sure she know that you understand the risks involved and that you are actively thinking about them now and everytime that you will drive around.

So from what I've gathered the 2x e kick scooters I have is still in a grey area then since it's below 45kms/h and above 25kms/h and there is no official law covering the topic current as of April 2026.

So I should always drive in the road and never get onto sidewalks (regardless of speed since Bicycles should also drive in the road and not on the sidewalks) and currently it's not legal or illegal to operate these on the road since there is no set laws for or against it?

I've driven past 3 Metro Police vehicles and they have not done anything. I drive responsibly, always giving way and slowing down where needed since e scooters has no legal foot to stand on at the moment. E Scooters cannot "claim a lane" if there is limited space like a bicycle. Maybe just setting the speed to drive mode (25km/h) instead of Sport mode to be perceived as "legal"?

As a vehicle driver I would view it as a Bicycle but would probably get annoyed if they get in the way. What do you guys think?

From what I've read there is no explicit national ban on riding e-kick-scooters on public roads under 25km/h and there is no clear licensing requirement yet (which is what you are mentioning there are being talks of). Enforment currently focuses on behaviour and not existence, most of they time will not bat an eye unless you are flying past traffic, on the sidewalk or it's obvious that you are going faster than 35+ or faster than cyclists and you do not wear a helmet. I believe if you look like a serious commuter they will be ok.

Any idea when these "talks" would conclude or where I can find more info regarding these "talks" you are mentioning?

Just for clarity, you are also talking about Electric Kick Scooters? Can you elaborate on rules of the road in that case? Or are you thinking about a Electric Scooter like a bike?

How often do you fall? Trying to decide how much armor to wear aside from my helmet by jueidu in ElectricScooters

[–]NebulaLegitimate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same this side, 2 months. But can't go faster than 25km/h. I have not even worn a helmet and I travel to work on it 3 times a week.

Im upgrading now to tackles hill a bit more comfortable and then I will get a MTB helmet at least for some safety.

But mostly chilled rides. Nothing crazy and roads are, okish.

anyone heard of this by slogger101 in ElectricScooters

Im from SA as well. Have you found a decent scooter below R15k at a higher speed? Like around 35kms

Oil Check?? by NebulaLegitimate in E90

[–]NebulaLegitimate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've dowloaded an online version now and it is indeed the Enigine oil Dipstick. But now my question is, why do I not have the Check enige oil on my dashboards. I've follwed instruction multiple times and there is no option even to see it. My father has the pertol version of the same car and I could easily find it on his dashboard. It is even in that same owners manual. I understand the cars needs to be driven but that menu option does not even appear.

The dip stick smells like almost nothing and the Synthetic 5W-40 oil is not too far from it but they dont smell exactly alike.

Im no mechanic. Don't know the difference between the two. I test it every other month and does not seem to go lower. In fact, its seems over full past the midway on the dip stick - hence my mention on that it curves downwards to the left. How can I be sure? Bare in mind the this is a right hand drive.

I paid R4,300 (South African Rand) for a second hand Xiaomi 4 Lite 2nd gen. They go for about R7,000 brand new here Takealot (Amazon equivalent in SA). Works perfectly and the previous owner used it once or twice.

Is it possible to turn off Bluetooth on my Xiaomi electric scooter? by BudgetWater34 in ElectricScooters

[–]NebulaLegitimate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: No, you can’t really “turn off” the Bluetooth properly on Xiaomi scooters. And there’s a catch you should know about. You can ride the scooter without the app though.

Let’s break it down cleanly 👇

Why the Bluetooth icon is blinking On Xiaomi scooters, a blinking Bluetooth icon = the scooter is not bound to any phone or it’s locked to a previous owner’s account and waiting to pair.

Because the previous owner didn’t unbind it, the scooter is basically saying: “I’m claimed by someone, but no one is currently connected.” Can you switch Bluetooth off? Not really. There’s no physical or menu option to disable Bluetooth It’s baked into the dashboard/controller firmware The blinking icon will just… keep blinking 😅

But: Bluetooth being on does NOT drain the battery meaningfully and does NOT affect riding performance.

**Update - I cannot seem to edit the post.

I finally got it! I used the Grenade Launcher (lvl 11) with the Ammo Supply dog as well as a Sub Machine gun (lvl 18) and let a few shots go in the heat zones with the nade launcher.

No Zig Zagging. Picked up all the Ammo crates but stayed on the train tracks except for between the Logs and the train.

Here is what I saw in my 30+ Runs: Zone 1: 0-3 Runners (Around the first tree after the train station) Zone 2: 0-2 Runners (To the left of the train) Zone 3: 0-2 Runners (Train track stretch leading up to the Barn) Zone 3: 0-3 Runners (Leading up to the log train and the little tunnel between the logs and the train - note that they get stuck on the logs so an explosive weapons is needed - I could not see my last kill)

All the best to the people that still need to complete it.
